you can use the scrub in arrangement view by enabling Permanent Scrub Areas in Live’s Look/Feel Preferences.
Read the chapter 6.2 in the live manual.
If you want to use the mouse, the scrub concept is very good because you can choose how much you move by setting your quantization accordingly

There is a little speaker icon that the mouse pointer changes to if you mouse over the top of the track view area that you are editing in. You could try that to see how it fits into your work flow. When the speaker icon appears just click where you want to go back to or forward to. I use it a lot and helps with my workflow when editing notes.

this MIDI map for the Mackie Control is more comprehensive and a bit easier to follow:

Hey Stromkraft, I see that you have push as well, is it push 1 ore 2?
Because, with Push 1 I have no Problems with my Alphatrack, but after I upgrade to Push 2, I can't use my Alphatrack anymore...

This is a great thread - I was trying to sus this out through Max4Live and this is so much easier.

1. Just set up Mackie Control as a control surface. And Bome translator virtual midi port 1 in the in and out box.

2. Then use Midi-translator to convert keystrokes to Note on/off G6 for rewind and Note on/off G# 6 for fast foward

----- It only moves a beat at a time.

3. For faster transport - just put a string of notes together and assign them to another key in midi translator.

Every Daw should have transport controls. Rewind FF are a must. I do not see the logic in not having them as some people prefer to use a keyboard to edit and navigate while others prefer a mouse. So it would be nice if Ableton had a more open approach to satisfy the needs of different users.

I'll play devil's advocate even though I use FF and REW all the time with Live.

DAW transports are just a holdover from the days of tape. With tape you needed FF/REW because you coudn't jump to a different location instantaneously. Even locators came from tape, the last few generations of studio machines had locator features. But DAWs are not tape recorders so they don't need to have the same type of transport controls. The fact that they do simply means that a tape-like interface makes sense.

I set up loops or use locators when I want to audition edits, automation and overdubs. My controller has buttons to turn looping on and off, set and clear locators and tweak loop pointers. I'll often use FF/REW when setting the locators though, it's simple to back up in the arrangement and then hit a button to set new locator at the proper moment. It's hard to do that looking at waveforms

I suppose. Old school or not, it's still very useful.

When in Arrangement view, playback starts from the playback position (the insert marker).
You can set the Arrangement playback position by clicking anywhere along the Arrangement to place the flashing insert marker. Or - if you wish to use only the keyboard - you can move the insert marker with the left and right arrow keys, and start playback from the new position with the space bar.

PS: don't use left and right arrow keys while a section is selected, unless you want to move the selected section.

Yes, transport controls work on Akai MPK 249 but not RTZ (Return to Zero) like I would like. I've been "mousing" and typing 1,1,1, to get to beginning of track. Thought I was just an ignorant Noob fumbling around. Turns out it's a lame MISSING BASIC FEATURE IN THE DAW? WTF?!?

You don't need to type 1.1.1 to go to the beginning in any DAW.
Just click on stop to stop the playhead and again to go to 1.1.1
If you want to play from where you stopped, use CTRL -SPACE
If a clip is selected or a region, Ableton will play from the beginning of the clip or region
A double click on stop will set the playhead on 1.1.1
