separate multiphonic midi track into monophonic parts?
separate multiphonic midi track into monophonic parts?
Is there any way to more easily separate a single 4 part midi track into 4 monphonic tracks, eg SATB? besides going though and deleting unwanted noted thoughout the track 4 times. If not in Ableton, elsewhere? thx

You might be able to find a workaround by using the Pitch MIDI effect, which allows you to filter MIDI data. This approach could work perfectly if your different voices always stay within a fixed range.
Otherwise, I’d consider looking for a M4L device or a MIDI Transformation Tool.
Let me know if you find a solution!

Pitch midi effect only alters pitches? You probably meant something else?
No, the 4 voices don't separate into fixed pitch ranges - if they did I could just copy and paste as new the 4 ranges in turn.
I' looked at M4L devicse and Ableton's MIDI Transformation Tools, not finding anything there yet.

You can also filter incoming MIDI notes.
27.5 Pitch
27.5 Pitch
The Range and Lowest controls act together to define a pitch range through which notes are allowed to pass. Notes outside of the defined pitch range will be blocked, and the effect’s LED light will flash when this happens.

Aha, in Pitch you can set pitch range. But since the 4 voices under discussion are not range-limited, this doesn't succeed.,
But thanks for indicating a function I wasn't aware of! But, this has an outcome like manual global selectiion of a range within the midi file in a track, which seems easier for this, as far as it goes. later !

for chords, I came across this patch: https://github.com/zsteinkamp/m4l-ChordRipper
it spreads chords across multiple instruments, but not individual notes, they would have to overlap.
for separating voices from one single midi file, i'm afraid that it's manual labour. if it's actual written music, as in quartet or choir, maybe there are actual stem midi parts available.

Interesting, thanks! It does seem there is no way to separate eg a Bach 3-part invention midi into 3 tracks except manually.

Yes, I think the main issue would be determining which voice a single note belongs to…

That’s a good job for AI in my opinion.

No doubt about it.

This is absolutely not what the OP is asking for, though.5Tones wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 2:15 pmIf you have MAX, give this a go.

Sorry then, must have absolutely misunderstood. (OP - I use this to filter a bass note and a high note in a chord).

I was maybe absolutely dramatic.
It could work for a "one VS the rest of the notes" situation, but not with a 4 voice polyphony scenario where you need to get the proper voicing.

Cool, no worries. Yes its back to the question of how to select/filter the voices that overlap. If they're tagged / labelled somewhere there will be a way. Excel to MIDI is a thing apparently.
