True Peak limiting mode

Post by favox » Tue Mar 04, 2025 3:47 pm

I'm reading limiter effects reference of ableton manual reference and thus says
Finally, the True Peak mode prevents inter-sample peaks.
and I'm wondering what are inter-sample peaks?

Read this article
0 dBFS (the supposed ceiling in digital audio) isn’t always the true limit. Intersample peaks occur when the analog signal, after digital conversion, exceeds the digital maximum.
Short answer is that the converters can overshoot when the samples are hitting 0 dBFS and clipping is the result.
