Drum rack choke "click" issue

Post by just bask » Fri Mar 13, 2015 6:44 pm

Hey guys, I really couldn't find the answer to this one.

I've recorded some electric guitar, sliced up the parts into a drumrack and used the choke feature and every slice plays through to the end of the whole sample so I can trigger a note and let the whole thing run until I decide to trigger another slice. Now the problem I'm having is that I'm getting click sounds.
It's not happening because of bad start marker placement, because starting any slice (as long as it is the 1st to sound) doesn't get that click (with a bit of attack it should be gone anyway), only when I trigger the same or another slice again.

I'm thinking it maybe has to do with how the previous sample is cut off or maybe a phase issue between the two, but it's a pain in the butt.
I don't want to have to edit every sample to perfection, because why would I otherwise even use the slice to midi feature in the first place, right?

Any ideas what is going on or what other method of choking or retriggering could be a solution?

trying to figure out a similar problem with little actual clue offered neither on ableton forums nor reddit. since i am working with sine-wavy, sustained 808s, this seems a reasonable take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwGyqJMPmvE&t=276s

Ahhh, the clicks of imperfection. Slap on some blurry reverb and delay.... Or consider the Retrigger of the same sample and how many voices the sampler can use. I bet it's something in there.

Like... If you have 4 notes playing their decay/release envelope, and the Sampler/etc is set for that sample to only use 4 voices, consider when you play a 5th note but there is simply no voice available for it. Essentially no voice given to it by the Live Engine, by the intentional choice of 4 - 8 - 16 voices/etc, which affects CPU as well as style in some cases, even if the voice could be played easily.

What happens is slightly ungraceful but by design, the other voices are simply cut off.

Often, I have a single, long sample, which I do want to trigger frequently, and hear all the tails unfold. So it could be in one single Sampler slot, set to "20 voices" with "Retrigger" set to OFF - When I do this, I do not notice or cannot hit the note 20 times manually and notice clicks at the long tails under the barrage of noise I do want.

Another thing to consider is to use the "Fade" features within some of the playback modes in the sampler. You might need considerable fades with rapid release times, even if the delay is long, to avoid clicks. It's just the nature of some material. One thing to check before doing a "slice" is to use an external editor to fix any DC offset. That's not a laborious trek compared to close edits of a lot of clips. If there IS DC offset, that could be a culprit. If there isn't, it won't be likely to have any effect.
