Midi / Audio Routing Question using Behringer Neutron

Post by Trismos » Tue May 27, 2025 6:40 pm

Hello

I have an Impulse 25 Keyboard and a Behringer Neutron connected to the computer via standard usb running into Ableton 11 Suite.
I have the audio out of the Neutron into input 1 of my Apollo Twin.
I have two tracks set up in Ableton - a midi track (Neutron Midi) with Midi From the Impulse and TO the Neutron. I thought I was going to have to have an audio track (Neutron Audio) set up with audio in from the Neutron Midi track but:
* There is NO option in the Neutron In track Audio From drop down menu that says Neutron Midi.
* I DO get audio from the Neutron Midi track even though there is nothing providing me with options for audio routing (that I can see).
* I can use the Ext. In drop down menu of the Neutron In audio track to choose the audio coming from the Apollo but only get audio with both tracks armed and sound coming from both - if I turn down or mute the Neutron Midi track, no audio to the audio track. This of course is not what I'm looking for.
* If I drop an effect onto the Neutron Midi track, I get nothing. I can of course add effects to the Apollo Console App and I can also just go with 5 pin Midi from the Impulse to the Neutron and negate having to route it as I am doing above, but why am I getting audio from the Neutron Midi track that I cannot route internally within Ableton and not have to hear that track? How do I record the audio of just that track then?

Appreciate any insight or thoughts,

Your MIDI track is just routing MIDI from the Impulse to the Neutron. There's no audio being produced inside that track – I suspect you're hearing the Neutron through direct monitoring – which is why it doesn't show up as a source for your audio track.

If you want the audio from the Neutron, that will be coming in through the Apollo Twin. So your second track should have that as its (external) source, not the internal MIDI track. Set monitoring to IN to hear incoming audio without arming the track.

However, there's a more elegant way to do this with just one track.
- Create a new MIDI track. If you have only one MIDI keyboard, you don't have to specify it as the source: by default, the track will listen to all incoming MIDI.
- Add an External Instrument device to the track. Set it up with MIDI to the Neutron and audio from the Apollo Twin.
- Voilà! Your MIDI track now contains the Neutron as an audio-producing instrument.

One more thing: best to turn off direct monitoring on the Apollo Twin, or you'll always hear the signal twice.

The Neutron does not have an audio interface which is why it doesn’t show up as an input option.

Audio interfaces always appear in the inputs and outputs by their names, NOT the names of whatever is plugged into them.

I think they were looking for the MIDI track called "Neutron" as an internal input source, not the Neutron itself as an external source. (The misconception being that a track simply routing MIDI from a controller to a synth would carry audio.)
