Expressive chords on Standalone

Post by Rapidsound247 » Wed Jun 25, 2025 5:11 am

So happy to be able to use expressive chords in standalone mode. When selecting expressive chords I can see the midi folder with all the other chord sets so my question is how to I import the chords so that I can use them with expressive chords. I understand how to add a midi clip to the session view but how do I import the midi clip to expressive chords?

I think a related, and perhaps more ideal workflow question would be "why aren't the presets for expressive chords showing up on my Push?"
I'm having a similar issue: I see the midi files folder but not the presets folder.

You're right, we need to add presets using the midi files to the Pack. Nice catch.
I'm forwarding, but it'd be nice if you could also report this to Support.

Submitted the support request
For now, you can do this:
Open your directory on Push from the Live browser
Go to Push>User Library>Presets>Midi Effects
Create a New folder within this subfolder named "Expressive Chords"
Go to Ableton Live library> MIDI effects (Top half of browser, native devices), and expand the Expressive Chords Device
Drag all the presets to the folder you created on push

The presets will not be orphaned. You can open any off those chord sets directly from Push. No need to go to Packs>Expressive Chords first.

Instead of loading expressive chords via packs after it has been installed, load it as a max for live device onto your track. Once loaded you can click the swap button to select chord sets.

It took me hours to figure it out and therein lies the biggest issue with push.
Things that are supposed to be fundamental and obvious to the instrument is either buried in a forum, m4l device or other side of much frustration.

Ableton really needs to bring a new ux designer onboard that is committed to making music/performing on the push fun. These are not the greatest suggestions but maybe others here can add low hanging feature requests to make it more fun and inspiring:
1. Display on the screen the notes/chords that is played.
2. When you play a pad/chord highlight some pad choices that would be good choices to play next in currently selected chord genre set.
3. Do a layout where you can separate the bass notes on one hand and strum the higher notes with the other.
etc
