Different Time Signature denominators? other than powers of 2?

Post by Lumix » Tue Sep 02, 2025 1:39 pm

Hi,

i am trying different time signatures out and i noticed, i can only enter powers of 2 into the Denominator? so 1,2,4,8,16 and i have to set the global grid manually to triplet, so that i can get for example 2/3 pulse going.
Is it possible to achieve the 2/3 of 2/5 in a global way?

Makes no sense to restrict to powers of 2 and only gives us triplets as additional option? :(

Or is this another thing, which is impossible with Live?

If it is, i have to create a suggestion, because in the current state, even setting 2/3 is to complicated and unmusically.

Thanks

Instead of 2/3, why not use 6/4 or 6/8 for a triplet feel? And 10/8 for quintuplets?

Lumix,

I am curious, can you suggest some scores that feature something like a 2/3 time signature.

I am confused because my understand is that in a time signature the denominator specifies the type of note being counted and the numerator specifies how many of the denominator notes fit in a single bar.

In western music (and time signatures come from the western music tradition) the basic note elements are all based on divide by 2.

ie Whole notes, 1/2 notes. 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes etc. The western tradition doesn't embrace the idea off a 1/3 note. As you correctly pointed out the triplets are used to divide by three. A 1/3 note doesn't exist in the tradition.
