MIDI clip border inaccuracies in arranger - an issue for you too?

Post by UnderwaterSunlight » Mon Sep 29, 2025 4:17 pm

THIS ISSUE CONCERNS MIDI CLIPS.

I asked Artificial Intelligence (duckduckgo.com / GPT 5 mini) about my issue (Clip border inaccuracies in arrangement view). I wanted to know whether this is real. This is the reply I get which coincides with the particular problem I get at times:

"Yes — users have reported MIDI clip border/boundary display inaccuracies in Arrangement View (notes or clip edges appearing slightly offset from the grid or from where playback/notes actually occur). This appears intermittently across Live versions and shows up in Ableton forums and user reports."

Has also happened to me in current versions of Live upon loading an arrangement that was originally created with an older Live version.

Anyone out there also having an issue along those lines?

Yes! Very often I'll resize a clip to what should be a bar (for instance). Then I'll CMD + D to repeat it and find that all the repeats gradually go out of time because there's a very small start or end offset. I don't know why it does this. I wonder if it's snapping to something else in the project, like a zero crossing on a waveform, or a note end, or something like that. I just have to keep an eye on the length in the status bar at the bottom. But I'd love to know why it does this.

Does it appear at any horizontal zoom level?

Will have to test that when it comes up again (which is infrequent).

Sometimes it becomes evident when I hover the mouse over a MIDI clip and look at the status bar at the bottom of the screen. It would display an odd value clip length there which doesn't correspond to the pertinent MIDI clip even if zoomed in deeply.

Will also have to find out whether this affects audio clips as well.

The positions and lengths of clip brackets are usually also displayed in the clip properties. Usually if the length is slightly out of time, the number will be a faded digit rather than a solid Zero for instance. Can type in the position or length that you want.

Additionally, when it comes to highlighting ‘sections’ on the arrangement timeline, if your highlighted section is larger than the clip itself, it might duplicate that slight extra bit of space. If the clip itself is selected only, and your clip properties are good, you should be able to duplicate fine.

Yes, sounds logical.
So, one must pay close attention when editing clips regarding their properties...

Just to be sure: are you usually resizing clips with the grid active? In this scenario everything snaps to the grid, so it's quite hard to get it wrong.
