Instrument folders/categories are back (on Push 3 & DAW) - Via TAGS!

Post by GusHage » Mon Aug 25, 2025 1:39 pm

At first, I thought this was only on my Push 3, but it's also in the DAW!

So, I somewhat recently started using the colors/tags in the browser to mark my favourite instruments and effects. I did this because I was quite sad to have to search for my most used things in the updated browser (Live 12). Something that disappointed me some months back was that when I added 'Operator' to my favourites, and I then chose it for a track, it just picked an 'empty/generic operator preset', meaning I didn't get to choose WHICH operator preset/sound/synth/instrument to pick - like a bass or pad, lead sounds or what-have-you.

Fastforward to today and I can't tell you why I did it again, BUT when I did it today, not only did it let me subsequently choose WHICH Operator preset I wanted, it actually put them in the old folders/categories that I had missed soooo much since upgrading to Live 12. (HAPPY ME)

I do not know if this is somehow intended, but it seems odd considering it's not the way the browser behaves when you add an Operator device that isn't placed in a colored/tag section. As I was writing this, I realised, however, that it also works this way when browsing on the screen of my machine.

Did someone else already figure this out? If so, apologies for the repost, but I was just too excited to leave it or even look for someone else mentioning it!

See the 2 images for yourself ! :D

If it works for others, too, congrats to all who missed the old browser, like me, I guess! And here's hoping they do not change this back.

Please, Ableton, do not change this - let us have it both ways!!! <3

Nice find!
I did not notice this. So the category folders are exclusive to Collections it seems. One thing to note is this system gets thrown out once you use filters. Clearing filters restores the folder structure.

Another discrepancy for Push browsing is it does not place the root Live devices on top of the results list when you have other presets marked in the collection. So you have to hunt for "Drift" for instance among your other presets on Push.

another limitation is that it appears to only keep track of stock folders.
Even before filters, My User Library of presets includes far more folders/categories than the collections. For example, even if I've assigned the Drift the same collier collection, even if I've assigned the preset folders within Drift in the User Library, even if I've collared the individual presets themselves, the are not appearing in a Collection. I did press the Clear button to clear both the search criteria and filters. Something still may have changed in an update.
