The main innovation here is being able to apply swing to time scales larger than 1/8th and 1/16th notes (1/2 note, 1 measure, 2 measures, etc) and also adjusting the "curve" of the swing.
He demonstrates the "traditional" way @ 7:00 and then @ 8:30 he starts to expand into larger swing amounts (1/2 note) and eventually into a 4 bar swing.
