Do you smoke then record? or do you...
i will say one of the more fun experiences i have had was shrooming and playing with NI spektral delay. no sample in it at all. just the plugin by itself...and white noise...
ahhh...that was silly, but rather entertaining...

I had a lot of fun when I was partying, I used to LOVE tripping, but I never had a chance to do any of this wonderful stuff I do today (like making strange blips and bleeps in my little studio) cus literally all of my money went for drugs and alcohol. As long as I had a skateboard and a bag of weed I was content.
In my own personal experience the concept that drugs enhance creativity is a myth. I suppose at the very beginning, or if I had used in moderation then maybe. But as to actually being under the influence - I can't tell you how many times, while under the influence of halucinogens, I had solved the mysteries of the universe, or created drawings in league with the masters of old - only to come down the next day, look at them, scratch my head and think "what the hell???".
I watched the movie "The Shining" for the first time while on a quarter ounce of really good mushrooms - That inspired me. It inspired me to never watch scary movies while triping ever again!
Today, for me, drugs and alcohol are a waste of my life, my time and my money. Even if I did still smoke weed, I don't see how I could afford it. There's always a new upgrade, or new music, or something out that I want to get.
peace

I've outgrown substance use/abuse, too.

good for you guys.
some of us can handle moderation.
again, they are simply tools. Not everyone likes to use a power saw, and not everyone is responsible enough to do so. It doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to use one, and it doesn't invalidate what i've done with them.
I'd probably ruin my life if i liked heroin. But William Burroughs wrote great books on that drug! What do you think changed the music of the Beatles from "I wanna hold your hand" to "i am the walrus"??
It's not for every one, but it is for some people.

Luckily, I can handle the weed in moderation but I have to admit, when I get stoned and open ableton, I always think I create not the best Live set, but the best template/midi assignments with my gear. Then the next time I open Live, I do it all over again. Bad for productivity.
That being said, I create less when sober and more when high. That's just me, though. I have collaborative musician/friends who are absolutely f'n useless after a bowl of ganja.

Yeah, you know, the bottom line is how does it affect your life. But the funny thing is, in my experience, the people who do have a problem also have the hardest time honestly answering that question.
Even as a recovering addict I have nothing against weed, or even drugs in general. I just found that I can't do them, well that's not technically true; I can get high if I want, I'm just not willing to accept the consequences that invariably arise when I drink or get high. So I stopped.
But if you can smoke, party, whatever and keep it under control, more power to you, have fun, smoke one for me if you'd like.... I don't judge, not when it comes to that. Christ, I used to shoot heroin.

just felt like adding to this thread because it's now about a week weed free, in fact I'm not missing it in the slightest and it's amazing me how much more productive I'm being
for so long I for some reason have felt like it was my creative catalyst, but it's always been an internal conflict - filled me full of headfuck and I cannot even describe how good it feels to now be being more creative than ever and completely free of my beast of burden.
I've got energy!
still have a drink or 2 but even that's down because I'm not drinking to escape the weed head F.
I urge you all to try it!

The urge to smoke again for me hit me at about 4 weeks after giving up. Not when I expected at all. But hey it's not smack and fair balls to any man here who's kicked that successfully (just about atones for ye being thick enough to try it in the first placeforge wrote:just felt like adding to this thread because it's now about a week weed free, in fact I'm not missing it in the slightest and it's amazing me how much more productive I'm being

I seem to carry around a memory with me that after about 3 weeks weed free I start feeling really really good, (like riding bikes up mountains good) but it's been a long time since I've gone that long, so I'll have to seeikeaboy wrote:The urge to smoke again for me hit me at about 4 weeks after giving up. More proof that convinces me that anyone with true talent, creativity, ambition and self-respect doesn't need to rely on substance use/abuse to release it.

Ya know, I think the key word in your post is "rely". I think people who have convinced themselves that a substance is the key, or they need it to unlock and promote their creativity, are foolling themselves. I think that's the myth - that a substance, in and of itself, is the answer.hambone1 wrote:

for the simple reason that drugs tend to enhance your experiences - so food tastes more intense, sex is more intense, colours are more intense and music is more intense - so under the influence you are already experiencing it more intensely so it takes less to make you go "wow"
that's it really, a few people (including your good self smutek) here have said about thinking your like the great masters then waking up the next day and thinking WTF? It's because it's easier to be impressed when you're whacked because you already like sound more to begin with!!
I definitely got very creative and tried some interesting things, but I then was unable to be discerning and actually finish anything.
You're more likely to leave crap in when you're stoned because you might enjoy it more intensely and so even enjoy the bits you should really get rid of
