How to make a DJ-style transform button in Live

Post by Sales Dude McBoob » Mon Nov 10, 2025 4:43 am

Hi everybody,

I want to make a DJ-style transform button for Live. This is a simple mute button, but it's an instant toggle - you press the button in and the signal mutes, the moment you let go of the button the signal unmutes. The result is one of the foundational sounds in hip hop. For reference, listen to the intro of the Beastie Boys song Car Thief. Adam Yauch was a big user of the transform button or switch, but he referred to it as a terminator.

Transform buttons used to be built into some DJ mixers. It's sort of a cheat code for those of us who do not have highly developed crossfader skills.

I tried mapping a key to the mute button in the Utility in Live, but that required two presses, one for off, another on. That's no good. Anyone know how to do this?

So you want it to be momentary, right?

There's several options.
The "best" would probably be setting your controllers button to momentary if possible. Does it have an editor?
Other option is using M4L (Performer from the Performance Pack will provide you with an easy toggle to momentary converter).

Not sure if this would work but Live has a crossfafer. Maybe mapping a key to the crossfader? Just make sure only the cutting channel is assigned to B

Additionally, you might be able to put Utility in a Rack and use a macro assigned to a key instead of a button

what in Live are you planning to control with this? and how are you planning to physically control this? it's possible the hardware button itself may have settings to make this easier...assuming you're controlling it with an external piece of hardware. let us know what device you're using to do so, that might help things along.
