Very weird recording problem with Live 12

Post by slotermeyer » Mon Nov 17, 2025 1:26 am

Hi,

I've been dealing with a strange and annoying issue in Live 12 that affects my ability to record (particularly sound effects). Recently I've been noticing that Ableton not only appears to have some kind of noise gate on Input 1 (so only vocals come through), but both inputs are not recording sound above roughly 10kHz. I have an old iCONNECTAUDIO2+ interface I've been using for years, so when I started noticing this problem, I figured it was something with the interface being old or something. I've since bought a new (well, refurbished) Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen, and it worked fine right after I set it up - but suddenly a few days later the exact same issue is happening now with this new interface. I've just tested these inputs in Reaper and none of this is an issue, so this almost certainly has to be something within Ableton. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening... any takers?

Silly Q: any effects devices loaded onto the audio tracks?

Not a silly question at all! And nope, this happens even when there are no effects on the track. Additionally, the master track usually only has an instance of the SoundID Reference VST and a Utility device.

Does that mean it still happens after removing SoundID? Have you checked for any noise reduction stuff that may be enabled for you mic input? Macs can have this enabled for cutting out external noise on facetime calls etc, maybe there's a windows equivelant that's been enabled by some recent update..? If no devices are loaded to any tracks, it's very unlikely the cause stems from within Ableton Live. I'd look outside of Live for the culprit.

Is this relevant

Sorry for the late reply! Had a long holiday week with family.

Anyway, I switched the MacOS Mic Mode to Standard and that fixed it! Of course it was just a simple switch flip  Thanks very much to both of you for your help!
