Please Create A LInux Version

Post by smccarthy945 » Sat Jan 17, 2026 2:15 pm

Quite a few of us are simply maintaining a Windows partition or dual boot simply to run Ableton. Wine doesn't work well and it does run under a virtual machine but it's not ideal. My laptop has a dual boot setup and Ableton is the only application I cannot run natively under Linux at this point. The only one. Bitwig and Reaper have been able to offer Linux version so I am not sure why Ableton is so hesitant? The way Ableton is programmed the port should be really straight forward.

Us Linux users are rather technical so we are more than willing to accept an Ableton Linux version with the caveat that there is no support offered. I suggest just publishing both Flatpack (Fedora) and Snap (Debian/Others) packages and this will cover a majority of distros. You can also offer an SH install as a last resort for other distros.

I love Ableton and want to continue to use it but I would be lying if I said the temptation to move to Bigwig's native Linux DAW hasn't crossed my mind so I can get rid of my entire Windows partition. Reaper isn't a viable option in my opinion as it doesn't have decent warping capability. I really do not want to move away from Ableton but at some point, Ableton needs to meet us Linux users halfway.

Windows 11 is a total POS at this point. I actually like Windows and have used it for over 25 years. However, after having to reinstall twice and enduring constant crashes, I finally had enough and installed Bazzite Linux. Bazzite has not crashed on me a single time and this is on the same laptop Windows would crash on 2-3 times a day. It's not the hardware if Linux runs stable and never crashes after 15 days of straight use. Furthermore, many of us are not comfortable with the telemetry, ads and AI being baked into the Windows OS at this point. Even if it was stable, I probably would still move away from it due to all the data they collect and the AI garbage they are putting into the OS.

I also own a Macbook M1 and have run Ableton on it but the hardware is limited in multi monitor support and it's too limited for daily use. Python and other programs are really hard to run on Mac. Linux is simply a superior OS at this point and the adoption rate has surpassed 5% after Steam started supporting Windows-based games. Now that games run on Linux machines, the marketshare is going to skyrocket.

The only question is whether Ableton is going to be in front of the adoption wave or catching up after it happens.

I'm locking this thread as, as you noticed, there's already a dedicated thread here where you already participated.
