I need to address a critical flaw in Ableton Live that makes it unsuitable for serious microtonal and expressive MIDI work: dragging MPE-formatted MIDI files into a MIDI track completely flattens the polyphonic expression data.
MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) allows independent per-note control of pitch bend, pressure, and timbre by assigning each note to its own MIDI channel. This is essential for microtonal composition, expressive controllers like the Linnstrument or Roli Seaboard, and any serious work with polyphonic pitch bend.
When you drag an MPE MIDI file into a standard MIDI track, Ableton collapses all the channel-specific expression data. All your carefully programmed per-note pitch bends, pressure curves, and CC74 timbre shifts get destroyed or merged into a single-channel mess. The musical content becomes fundamentally broken.
I'm paying professional-grade prices for Ableton Live 12. This isn't a hobbyist tool.
MPE is an established standard (adopted 2018), not some experimental format
Competitors handle this correctly - Bitwig maintains MPE integrity throughout the workflow
The workaround is absurd - I shouldn't need to route through separate plugins or import via complex clip manipulation just to preserve the data that's already in the file
MPE support isn't a luxury feature - it's table stakes for any DAW claiming to be professional-grade. If I'm going to pay Ableton's prices, I expect basic preservation of standard MIDI data formats. Otherwise, what exactly am I paying for that Bitwig doesn't already do better?
To Ableton: Fix this. Either make MIDI tracks MPE-aware or provide a proper import option that preserves channel-per-note data. This isn't a feature request - it's a bug fix for broken fundamental functionality.
Ableton Live destroys MPE data when dragging MIDI files to tracks - This is unacceptable
Re: Ableton Live destroys MPE data when dragging MIDI files to tracks - This is unacceptable
Live handles MIDI channels in its very own way, and I suppose that's where your issue's coming from, but I don't have any other DAW at hand right now to create and export a midi file containing MPE data to try so I might be wrong.
I guess the workaround for the time being is to actually record your midi files "manually" by playing them from another DAW which would send its midi into a midi track in Live. Not exciting, I know!
Did you ever contact Support about this?

Did you read this KB article?
I wasn't aware that there's different types of .mid files, it's explained specifically in the 2° chapter; you might find some helpful bits in here.
