Midi Conflict with Push 3 and OXI One MkII (Midi Capture)

Post by cparadisi » Tue Jan 20, 2026 3:40 am

ABLETON MIDI ISSUE

I'm running Ableton 12.3 on a Dell Win11 PC. I have a Push 3 and just added the (amazing) OXI One MkII to my setup. Both are connected to the PC via USB (no hub). I seem to be having some sort of midi conflict. Basically, I don't seem to be able to use midi capture on the Push when the transport is running. This only happens when I have a set where the OXI is connected.

I have a track with the OXI doing a simple mono sequence.

I have a track where I want to play pads on the Push. In my midi settings, the ports that show up for the Push 3 are "Ableton Push 3 MIDI (Port 2)" and "...(Port 3)". This doesn't seem typical of what I see the ports for Push 3 should be (I don't see anything labeled "(External Port)" as I see described on the Ableton site and elsewhere.
If I set the Push 3 track "MIDI From" to "Ableton Push 3 MIDI" Port 2 or 3, I don't hear anything when I play (though the midi track in indicator in Ableton shows midi going in).
If I set the Push 3 track "MIDI From" to "From Push" I get sound as normal. If I play something when transport is not moving and hit the Capture Midi button on Push it works as normal. If I play something on the Push when the transport in moving and hit the Midi Capture button, it records the midi from the OXI on its accompanying Ableton track. (This is the midi the OXI is sending, not what I play on the Push track.)

I want to be able to use Midi Capture on the Push track(s) while the transport is moving and the OXI is simply doing its thing on its own track...

HELP! (Thanks for any help you can give...).

Since your OXI isn't connected via Push's USB, you should deactivate any Push in/out in the MIDI ports Preferences. It only needs to run its Control Surface script, but for P3 this don't even have to be selected in the Control Surface section. Basically, you don't need to enable P3 anywhere in Live's Preferences MIDI tab.
Try this and let us know if that helps.

Thanks for the help. I did that and still get the same.
When I'm looking at the "Midi From" dropdown in the I/O section, what should I see regarding the Push? What I see is "From Push", no port numbers or anything.

I've tried seeing what I could do with the windows MIDI settings tools, but it all is above my knowledge level.

All I want to do is use Midi Capture on the Push while the OXI is running and transport is going.

That's right.

Just to be sure:
- a track receives the OXI sequence, its input is set to "OXI" (or whatever it's port is called)
- you have another midi track that you play from Push's pads. This track input has to be set to "fromPush"; it can't be set to "All Ins" because otherwise it would also receive the OXI's midi.
Transport is running, the OXI is playing its sequence, you're playing something on your Push, and now you pressing Capture.
In theory this should capture a clip on your Push track, and one on your OXI track.
But you're experiencing something else that bothers you... and I'm afraid I don't get exactly what that is.

Yes. The OXI track captures the midi coming in there but the Push track doesn't record anything. If the Push track Midi From is set to "All Ins" and I perform the same thing, the Push track captures the midi from BOTH tracks (the OXI and the Push), or ALL tracks if others are getting midi.

To be clear, the OXI track isn't armed.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me diagnose this.

Ok, I was able to reproduce.
The weird thing is that the issue, Live's behaviour isn't consistent!
At first I was getting the same result as you:
a clip was captured in my external sequencer track (be it armed with Monitoring set to Auto, or unarmed with monitoring set to IN), but not on my Push track.

But after trying several settings (i.e changing the ext seq track's monitoring mode, and also "hard arming" my Push track), suddenly a clip was captured but only in my Push track.
After a couple other try (without changing anything) a clip was captured in each track :?
Go figure!
There's definitely a bug messing this up.

Could you try testing with the Push track hard armed (i.e with Push already in Note mode, press the arm button so it turns from pink(ish) to fully red, just like a non-Push-controlled soft-armed track looks like) and see what happens.

If you can that'd be great to file a report to Support.
I'll also forward on my end.
