Pros and Cons of using external drive to work on and store all Projects

Post by spanktron » Tue Feb 03, 2026 2:42 pm

Hi everyone.

So i was wondering as i at times have the feeling i am running out of space on my 512gb macbook and cant afford to go to 1tb at present.

I realised that sometimes i will open an older Project (which is stored on an External SSD that is huckepacked on the back of the screen of the laptop) and will most times dont have obvious signs that anything is different just because it is stored externally.

That said, as it is computerland i would love to pick your brains especially if you use an external drive in this way, i.e having all projects „outside“ the computer“.
I am brainstorming and trying to calculate what the downsides could be in the long run and that is why i would like second opinions.

Let me know what you think are pros and cons of working like that.

I just did a speed test and see around 750-780md-ish read-write speeds. Its a Samsung T7 2 Tb drive.

Shouldn't this suffice?

Peace

These days with SSD and high bandwidth USB... well, you already know the answer since you tried

I need more believers. :-)

Call me crazy but i have managed to mess up things that where too stupid to admit just because i thought i took every aspect in account only
to find out a year or more later that my method was flawed.

Btw, i have tried it but never done any sort of test in terms of comparing if there is any difference but based on what you write
and thinking that all plugins are on the laptop etc , i cannot find a downside, unless…. somebody mentions one

Thank you for stopping by. Appreciated

Here's how I deal with this.
On my computer's internal drive (which is also a very limited 512 GB, hey Apple!) I have a "Current Live Sets" folder, where I store... my current sets.
Every now (not often enough tbh 😅) and then I have a look at these and either thrash the shit or move finished Sets or ones I know I won't do anything with soon to an external drive, in a folder where I store all my Sets.

It happens that I have to open and work on large projects (stuff like documentaries, so quite heavy) already stored on my external SSD, and because I don't feel like waiting for 40Gb to be transferred to my main drive (or don't have the space) I would work with the project kept on the external drive; I don't remember this being an issue.

Ah i see!

Yes exactly „Apple herrrrroooo! don make us feer ronery“

Ok i think i will just go for it. I also already use the method you use i.e storing the bulk of projects externally and prioritising
projects but i somehow always feel like some projects might jump out and complain about being neglected ….hahaha

I realise that i should be covered since all plugins are on the main drive and i guess thats where one could profit from speed (and practicality),
cause i tried installing the Arturia plugins resource folder on the external and its a mess so i returned them to the internal.
The only times i realised at times was when saving. This is where at times it took unnaturally long so i then knew they were on the external.
Thinking of it further, life is too short to be afraid of such things

Thanks for the input!
