iOS app to trigger backing track scenes?

Post by ozone7 » Sun Aug 10, 2025 3:00 pm

Hi. Been looking for this but I can’t find anything that isn’t over £100 and it’s a really basic functionality that I’m after.

I’d like to attach an iPhone to my mic stand and cue the next track (next scene in session view) rather than using the numeric keyboard on the laptop.
I’d like to avoid bending down to the laptop but still be able to see what song is playing next.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

There are various apps but I’m not entirely sold on the robustness of the method in general. It often leaves different levels of dissatisfaction or extra convoluted troubleshooting.

On the point about the number pad, you could consider doing a Bluetooth number pad. You still don’t get the feedback, but it’s a quick remote option.

Thanks. I ended up cue-ing to the next scene with a CC from an Ampero Control footswitch.

The four pedals are assigned to cue scene (play the current selected scene) and then the others to stop, and select scene above or below, so I can stop a song if there’s a click miscount or something and re-start.

The cue scene/play footswitch should be all I need as I have a midi message clip on every song start which moves the focus down to the next scene (song) when play is applied - ready for the next play command as we move through the set.

I’ve also got a specific patch change clip in each row, to change to the relevant preset number on my Axe FX, which gives me a visual tally for which song count-in is currently being cued in to our drummer.

Probably still room for error somewhere - and restarting a song requires a stop footswitch and a scene up press first, as the next song will be alread cued when I press stop. But it’s the best technique I could come up with.

Hi—I just wanted to chime in that I made a Mac and iPhone app that can do this, called Grip: https://grip.merges.net. It's Mac + iPhone (or iPad) only at the moment, but is pretty much zero setup and can trigger scene launches, navigate locators, and scrub through your set in arrangement view. (The free mode does all that, and when unlocked can control a lot more including recording, etc.) Definitely open to your feedback if you want to give it a try!
