Set Tempo from Midi Clip

Post by iamliamc » Tue Feb 17, 2026 12:02 am

Hey Forums,

Just new here from Reaper. A common workflow of mine is to have my sample chopped up, built my drum rack out everything is twisted and loose I start jamming on the pads til I know I've got a nice clip I want to record.

Then I record with no metronome and hit loop... verify the clip is exactly what I want... say 4 bars 4/4 or (whatever time signature and bar length the clip represents)

I used to just hit right click, set tempo from time selection... enter the bars and the time signature and snap! New tempo makes the clip I had selected perfect tempo.

What am I missing in Live? What's the right workflow to achieve this feeling of "record whatever I want" set the tempo based on it.

Should I be using warp editing... only other option would be to tap tempo before I recorded the clip then record it... but I find this is often a bit off.

Thanks in advance!

The process is simpler with Ableton. Just set up your kit, jam, then when you just played something you like, capture midi from the create menu. If you have midi controller that is made for live there is a capture button like on the Move, Push, and Launchpad.
