Set Ableton Live Set files to be "read-only"

Post by lukaleibovici » Thu Feb 19, 2026 8:26 pm

Hello,
I have made myself a custom mastering template and do not want to set it as my default ableton template since I already use one for my productions. Thus why I am trying to figure out how to set the Ableton Live Set file to be "read-only" so I do not overwrite it while working with it.

Every time when I open the Ableton Live Set's file properties and check the "read-only" box + save the changes I can still overwrite the file by saving it and when re-opening the file properties the "read-only" box is unchecked. I tried also to set the whole Ableton Project folder where the Live Set is saved to "read-only" but it did not work either.

This weird behaviour is not happening with other programs, in my experience only with Ableton Live.

I am using Live 11 & Windows 10 if this is relevant.

Hope somebody has a solution to this :)

Create a non-default Template. (File > Save as template).
Opening such template from the Templates section in Live's browser creates a copy, leaving the template unchanged.
