turns out you have to allow Live to access the Microphone in System Preferences by navigating to Privacy & Security and entering "Microphone"
This cleared it all up.

Duh!
It never occurred to me (still on way older macOS versions here where Security is probably less restrictive by default, or maybe I just forgot I had to do it a long time ago), thanks for the heads up!
And sorry I made you try boring and tedious procedures. I won't forget this one.
