sample offline problem

Post by ZenMusic » Sat Jun 06, 2026 10:51 pm

I have worked for a couple years on another pc that just crashed. The problem is the hard drive and it is totally dead unrecoverable.

Now fortunately I had an automatic backup program running once a week. So I have over 5 years of backups.

I have a new pc and restored 200+ ableton projects and can open them. However all of the say "sample offline" and don't play an sound.

So how do I fix that, the samples must be somewhere in the project. Guide me to rebuild these.. this really is my life's work, I'm preparing to create cd with them. THANKS

When you said "backups", what's saved actually?
Are these clones of your drive? I suppose no, or you probably wouldn't have this issue now.
The best way to go, imho, would be to recreate the same directories (your Live-related content) on your new drive.
That way your Sets will look at the same place as they used to, and will find exactly the files they need since... you've put them in the same place.

You can also use Live's files/project/library manager but I strongly suggest to first use the method above.

A DAW is in the first place just an audio-oriented files manager, all it does is playing together those files you're feeding it with/recording, and the first thing anyone should learn is how the software deals with the files it's using, where they are stored, where you can move them on your OS, how Live is tracking them, how the User Library works and how Live sees its content, how a Project is organized etc...
That's really not the fun part, but it's at most just an hour of looking at this and/or reading the documentation, and unfortunately it's not rare that one learns this the hard way after a devastating disk crash.

But you have backups, so you shouldn't worry.

thanks very much for the reply. I'll try to work this out tomorrow. and I will research in the documentation.

I didn't know that I didn't know something this important. It had worked for years so I just used it like a multi-track recorder

(I worked as a senior music producer for many years, did hundredds of recordings of the major symphonic ensembles and other classical and jazz ensembles)
From what you said, I think the problem is my directory structure. I have full disc backups (not images but snapshots of new and changed files) I just need restore them to the original folders.

Project Folder Structure

Every time you save a new track in Ableton, it creates a dedicated Project folder. This folder contains all the data related to that specific song or production.

ProjectName.als: Your actual Live Set file.

Backup: Automatically generated folders containing previous saved versions of your Live Set.

Samples: Houses all recorded audio, rendered tracks, and processed samples specific to this project.
Mac Studio M2 Max and MacBook Pro M4
