That was quick. In the price range upto around $1200, you can get the KRK V8s, V6s or V4s; the Mackie HR824s or HR624s; the Genelec 1029As or 2029As; the Tannoy System 800s, 600s or Reveals; the ADAM Audio P11-As and more.
As I'm sure you know there are many options, but even if you get the same pair as a studio that you go to, they won't sound the same because the environments will most likely be different. Any of the above are adequate for production, mixing and mastering, so it really will depend on key features your looking for (better mid range, better high end, full range, etc...), the type of room you have, price, etc....
The ADAMs are the hottest things around right now, but I haven't gotten a chance to listen to them yet--so I can't comment on them. I like the KRK V8s more than the Mackie HR824s because they were a lot less muddy sounding and were better in the highend, but the KRKs lack the bass that the Mackies provide. I like the HR624s better than the V6s and I like the Genelec 1029s better than the HR624, while the Reveals are actually pretty damn nice and cheap. I want to tell you to get the ADAM P11s, but I think it's partly because I'm really interested in those. I think I'm going to recommend the V8s. I've owned them before and compared them directly to many others, so I feel pretty confident in recommending them. Also, your a guitarist and all of my guitar friends prefer the KRK V8s to the Mackies. I've only read one bad review of the V8s and I never understood how the reviewer could've heard something so much different from what I've heard when listening to them. I'm still thinking about those ADAMs though.
