cool videos, and an interseting Live looping discussion.

I would like to try to experiment with live loopin,
but don't know where to start in Live as i am used to use it as a prearranged
loops and arragngement performance tool.

, is there a link to a howto sort of...
on recording multiple live loops with Live on the fly?

thanks for any tips.

Much soul to his stuff. I couldn't believe he was a skinny white Londoner when I finally saw him. He seems like a nutter on stage too. I hope he makes it to the states on this tour.
no offense man but soul??, I dunno he looked and sounded like a clown doing a bad caricature of some church scene off of the jeffersons to me. I think if you're impressed by soulful whiteboys then you could do a whole lot better, the doobies got soul, simply red has soul, hell justin timberlake has way more soul than jamie lidell, i'm serious he acts like somebody told him he'd have soul if he acted that way.
I totally agree with you about the artists you mentioned. Michael McDonald is on of my all time favorite voices no matter how cheesy some of his stuff is.
And you can laugh at me if you want ( I laugh at myself about it) but I think Justin Timberlake is sincere and has an amazing voice. Simply Red not my cup of royboos. I wasn't really speaking about Jamie's stage presence or the videos when I was talking about his sound. I am basing it more off of his recordings. I really like his solo sound. Don't really know any more about his stage presence than the clips that I saw there but I myself was impressed. Yeah the camera up in his face was a little much but oh well. I think I'd have to reserve my judgement on him any further until I met him and saw him a lot more. I'd hate to have my whole career judged off of a streaming media clip. Not saying that you are doing that at all but I would be if I commented from what little I saw. Anyway, thanks for the clown caricature Jefferson's image. That was great. I'll have wheezy chasing Jamie Lidell as a clown stuck in my head all day now :D

oh I wasn't joking about the doobies, timberlake and red, I think these are some soulful m/fs regardless of color. timberlake gets alot of flac for being white but i'm not with that kind of shit, dude expresses himself and i'm feelin it.

Lidell,, just don't know man. i should probably take a lesson from you and listen to him past that video, I know one thing he's got balls getting up in front of all those people actin like that, that' gotta count for something

Hey thanks for posting this stuff guys. I was wondering how to employ a midi foot controller to control basic features in Live such as firing a scene or a clip or arming a track, etc. But this midi translator apparently lets you control any aspect of the software with any midi controller... simply amazing.

I saw Kid Beyond open for Zilla 6 months ago at the Independent in SF. I had no idea he was a Live user beforehand, but it was a HOT show. One interesting thing was how he replaced the metronome sound with a single hit clip of his mouth percussion. I doubt he had any kind of cue system, so he would trigger Live, and this 4 count Pchh Pcch pchh Pcch would happen while he toasted over the top for a second - Genious!
It inspired me to get Bomes and I went out and got a FCB1010 footcontroller the NEXT DAY. It was like seeing Live used in these broad and bold strokes that Bomes makes possible. I can even trigger Record Quantize settings with this!

He jammed with Zilla later on, and it was just the sweetest part of the night, and probably some of the best music I've seen all year period.

The best part was that he is a prince of a guy, and we kicked it and talked, got eachothers numbers. He was even willing to come to a clinic at my store.

Cheers Andrew!

I think it's time we get organized on this one. There should be a user group of folks who specifically use Ableton Live for looping ON THE FLY.

I too have asked for help on this in this very forum and I have not yet gotten a response.

We're working on a help tutorial here. I'm putting together info from Kid Beyond and our many Live loopers on the forum, but I'd love to include more tips in the tutorial if you've got them -- send me a message!

Best,
Jesse

what about questions to be asked? Ive asked a few detailed things regarding my looping setup. IF they had been answered, I think they would have been very usefull in a faq.

Typical questions beginning loopers have are great too -- I can't guarantee answers to everything as these tutorials are generally short, but send them my way and I'll see what I can do.

Well ok, to start:

What is the typical sequence of steps to do what Kid Beyond is doing?

As far as I can see, basically it is:
-arming a track
-selecting a clip of predetermined length
-recording a performance to the clip
-having the clip start up immediately after the recording has finished

Is Bome Midi Translator the only way to throw a string of midi commands or keystrokes to Live?

Anyway, really looking forward to getting this going....

As far as I can see, basically it is:
-arming a track
-selecting a clip of predetermined length
-recording a performance to the clip
-having the clip start up immediately after the recording has finished
well:
1: I reckon the tracks are already armed when starting out.
2: I think the loop lenght is only determined by how long he lets it record
and 4: well, it does that already, if you hit the play button again.

So that's not a string of key-commands, more like one command to record, one to stop recording and start looping. Bomes is useful if you want to start looping loop A, while hitting record in slot B and turning on effect C with one press, for instance , or if you want to delete a loop, so for basic "beginner"-looping you are very likely to not need bomes at all, or maybe for deleting a clip. I just jump to the slot below instead of deleting, that works well for me.

So I have to do it manually (click or engage the clip's play button) with perfect timing? How about doing this automatically?

Sorry if my questions seem stupid...
