Exact warp marking

Post by Luca » Sun Oct 16, 2005 5:59 pm

I have been DJing with ableton for a while now (mainly breakbeat) but have struggled to get some tracks to warp mark exactly. I get it really close but not quite bang on. I put it down to inconsistencys of where I put my warp markers on the wavelength. Where should all my warp markers be (assuming you are zoomed in a lot), at the very start of the beat where the waveform is not very big or at the highest point. Maybe someone could post a photo zoomed in on their 1.1.1 marker and a marker halfway through the track.

sorry if this has been covered before, I did search the forum but could only find posts about how to warp marker.

thanks.

Use your ears instead of your eyes, and you can't go wrong!

In fact, I close my eyes and concentrate. I just have to remember to open my eyes to move the warp marker! :?

Try looping a simple 4 bar loop alongside the track that you are trying to warp and adjust the warp markers accordingly so that your tune runs in time with the 4 bar loop. Because the loop is never out of sync, you can rely on it to be accurate.

Works well for me!

I *think* Live cuts the slices at the markers in beat mode. That means that you should have your markers just in front of the waveform when warping.

Note that this shouldn't really affect the timing (as long as you are consistent) but you might end up cutting off the attack part of each beat.

You sometimes forget you have these when you have ableton!

1. Download this baby: http://www.mixmeister.com/download_freestuff.html
2. Drop your tracks into it and it will calculate the EXACT BPM.
3. Drop a track into an empty clip in Live.
4. Make sure you can see it's wave display at the bottom of the screen.
5. Enter the EXACT BPM (ie 126.06) as the track tempo.
6. Hit 'Warp'
7. Move the first warp marker to the first downbeat
8. Play the track with the metronome playing to check it.
9. Should be spot-on, last warp marker may need a slight tweek.
10. Hit save - track warped!

So lets say my warps are offset a bit....

Would it be recommended to go over the track, over all the whole numbers... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.... and match them out as warp mark anchors? Thats a LOT of time, surely more then some people claim (5mins...)

This just doesn't sound like the right method.

Always place warp markers before the transient - as close to the center line as possible. See attached screen shots. By checking the 'Fade' button in the clip's sample properties window, live will perform a 25ms fade to prevent clicks.

with practice, on MOST tracks, you can move the 1 to where it should be as in the pic above, and go to the end and move one of the last markers to where it needs to be.

now if youre not sure about that second part, knowing where it should be, that for me comes from just experience and knowing where measures relate to 8 bar changes, how long songs are, etc.

but for me, one or two markers are "warped". everything else in between is interpolated.
if it is a non dance track, or recorded vinyl, bet youll need many many more markers, though.
my favorites at the moment: MASSIVE. FM8. LIVE 6. Bome's Pro. KORE.
