Damn. Why can't I map my Electribes through midi?

Post by Daniel Dytrych » Tue Oct 25, 2005 3:09 pm

Hello.

Just decided to try and control ableton using my electribe mx and sx. For some reason, only a few of the knobs are being recognised by ableton. Can anyone help here? Are there any other users of the electribe series trying the same thing here?

Please help asap.

Thanks,
Daniel.

This is a total guess since I don't have any Korg stuff, but are you sure that all the knobs send MIDI?
My Roland MC-505 only sends MIDI from some of it's knobs, and some of the knobs that do send MIDI, only send relatively useless SYSEX messages.
Check your manual carefully, make sure that the knob is supposed to send MIDI and that the MIDI messages that it sends are of a type that Ableton is supposed to recognize.

Also, tell us how exactly you are determining that Ableton is not seeing any MIDI.

Yes, they all send midi. Ableton receives midi from every knob, it just isn't mapping them all. I will check the korg manual. In the demostration that I saw from Korg, all knobs send midi. The midi receiver in ableton lights up showing midi is being sent from my Korg.

Thanks,
Daniel.

electribes knobs send NRPN values, which are a special type of midi CCs, and that are not recognised by Live (look in a midi clip enveloppe parameters, there are some missing CCs: #6, #100 and #101, these are the CCs used by NRPN data).

so, yeah, forget it, you can't map electribes.

Thanks for that. It wasn't the news I wanted to hear though.

You can run it via one of the many midi mapping tools around to convert the NRPN's to CC's that Live will understand...PC or Mac?

I've actually done it. I read the manual and there is a midi utility which allows you to change the CC# Assignment. I select the knob on my electribe and just assign them between 1-95. It has worked.

Thanks,
Daniel.

Cool...that's one thing you can't do on the old Electribes

Another wild guess:
Maybe you could use a midi mapper? Try bome's midi translator perhaps.
