EMI 2|6 and a PC
EMI 2|6 and a PC
Emagic EMI 2|6 and a PC...
Has anyone had any good experience with this combo? Or am I just wasting my time?
What about others in this catogory / price range?
The Quattro? (crappy drivers???)
or the TerraTec Phase 2 6. (havent heard much of any good about this one)

Yep, what i'm using now!
I haven't had a problem yet and i got it in place of and m-audio quattro then duo. Basically the quattro just didn't work - i tried it on 3 different machines (including a desktop) and it just didn't work - m-audio had virtually nothing on their website, but i found a forum for the quattro and there were SO many problems i decided i was wasting my time and took it back to the shop and swapped it for a duo - which worked pretty much straight away (not TOO much fiddling) but then i realised that i couldn't pre-listen with it as it only had 2 outs (duh) so i sold it and got the emi 2/6 which worked straight out of the box -not a single bit of stuffing about, plugged it in, loaded the drivers and it worked. So yeah i would recommend it!

usb audio
My experience with the emagic product, not so good... It chattered at odd times when my old 450 mHz Sony was just running only @ 40-50% percent CPU. If you search these boards, you'll find similar stories. I just ebay'ed its sorry ass and now run out my headphone out - fortunately for me, Sony machines have good built-in audio cards. Now I can go up to 80-90% CPU (pretty easy to do @ 450 mHz) and the only problems I have are a disappearing cursor and 3-5 second lag time on any operation (still a drag, but totally dependant on the machine's limitations).
Just my experience - usb is simply not wide enough for multitrack audio. It's good for mice.

m-audio quattro
yes the quattro's drivers are cheat
i've spent a lot of time to make this box of metal to work
but now it works pretty well
but the latency is a bit high :11+12 ms at 441 sample
i've got a laptop p4/512mo ram/usb 2.0
but INMHO don't buy this cheat ( great sound but not reliable at all )

i get the impression '450mhz' sony is the issue here - my athlon +2200 plus 512ddr ram absolutely canes anything i throw at it - live +reason with LOADS in the rack - in fact to be truthful i'm yet to do a track it couldn't take - all with the EMI 2/6!
anything's possible these days (as in, a system that works) but i think you have to have a decent spec'ed pc.....

CPU speed vs. USB
No. it's not the CPU speed. I got the chattering (again, do a search and you'll find other posts) when Live's CPU meter was only at 40%. Now I can go up to 80-90% with no chattering at all. It's USB. (USB-1, at least)
Re: EMI 2|6 and a PC
I'll wait until the first reviews of that unit are in. The specs are looking great and the price is right, if it can stand to its promises it's going to be a killer unit.GRUFF wrote: or the TerraTec Phase 2 6. (havent heard much of any good about this one)

Re: CPU speed vs. USB
It's such a hard thing to get right when some pcs work, and some just don't - bill gates may have made his money from PCs being compatible with anything, but sometimes wouldn't it be nice to be able to just afford to go back to mac? They just work.from homerjsim wrote:No. it's not the CPU speed. I got the chattering (again, do a search and you'll find other posts) when Live's CPU meter was only at 40%. I haven't tried logic 6 yet, but I'm sure I'd love to go back that way, but specs vs cash I have to go PC.......Oh well I'm there now.....
And by now i have a cosy setup, which does run well, I'm sure, while your issue probably is USB related, if you had a newer machine it might work better, I don't know what the reasons are but i wouldn't mind betting it's just that as technology has improved overall, so has the way they handle things like usb (power to the port etc?)- i can't see why else you are having these problems while other users with the same interface, but newer machines aren't having any....but then i spose you enter the world of sony vs toshiba vs dell vs blah-de-blah-de-blah......
I bought a Medion/Cybercom laptop from a superstore about 4 months ago, never heard of it - probably satan's brand but the specs for the cash were the best i found and it has been absolutely solid as a rock since i bought it and i push it hard - 999 UK pounds athlon 2200+ 512ddr, 15in tft, 3xUSB 2.0, 1x firewire400, tv out, DVD CD_RW + kitchen sink all inclusive....Maybe you should look at a trade in as 450mHz machine is a little on the light side for audio...
