Best Controller for on the fly Live!

Post by FinoAttack-Tuuce » Mon Oct 31, 2005 10:45 am

Well, there are many, many controllers around..But the thing is we are lookin for the right one for our purpose..

We are using Ableton Live 5, Ableton Operator with a laptop of course, a club/dj mixer and two cdj's or 1210's whatever..
The thing is we..By the way "we", are two, so we have 4 hands on live :lol:

What we are trying to do is something like this;
-We have our own productions which we are working on playin them on the fly..(Our productions are mostly between 10-15 channels with fxs)
-We also want to mix our productions with known productions on cdj's or 1210's
-And we want to use samples and loops on the fly while we are playing the known tracks from the cdj/1210's

Well here is what it is..
The choices that we are thinking about the best controller for us are;
-FaderFox Micromodul LV1 & LX1; (http://www.faderfox.de).
Pros: Perfectly made for Live!
Cons: We are not be able to use these controllers with another program like cubase or reason.

-Doepfer PocketDial and PocketFader (http://www.doepfer.de/home_e.htm).
Pros: Endless rotary, good design, compatible to all software production programs (almost).
Cons: One module has only knobs, the other module has only faders..But where is the buttons? (Solo, mute, play, stop rec..etc.)

-Evolution UC33e (http://www.evolution.co.uk/products/evo_uc33e.htm)
Pros: Overlays, cheaper than other controllers, you can use evolution librarian program to make your own preset bank
Cons: It looks like this controller has it all, but is it true? really..

PS: I know that WaveIdea's Bitstream 3x (http://www.waveidea.com/en/products/bit ... /index.php) is better than all but we can not afford it now..

since youre working in a dj environment, i have another
suggestion.
my setup: Faderfox in combination with eclers nuo 4 mixer/controller

i use it with 1210´s/ DZ 1200 an you can use real dj mixer faders for mixing live into your set. you have 2 midi channels on the mixer with 4 rotary-push encoders(like faderfox) and several other buttons and 3 layouts, so its perfect for fireing shots into your set.it has FX sends to.
while faderfox is used only for the live remoting/controlling.
works fine.
cheers and happy mixing
flo

I have a laptop, a M-Audio Firewire 410, a nostromo n-52 and a soon to arrive Faderfox LV1. I'm shooting in the dark with that setup, but I'm sure it will be alright.
Long Live Live.

I recently aquired a doepfer pocket control which has good knobs, and to overcome the lack of buttons I'm going to buy a shitty numeric keypad (10 €) to solo/mute/fx on-off/scrolling scenes and if it will be not enough I'll buy a cheap usb keyboard so i?ll have plenty of buttons.

ok one more thing..

when i connect Faderfox LV1 and Doepfer PocketDial and a midi keyboard to my soundcard (m-audio audiophile) through a midisport..do i suffer from latency? or does my computer crashes when i use all of them at the same time?

i mean does it cause a problem when 3 different modules send signals at the same time to my soundcard and pc?
