HELP!!! halloween disaster: laptop doesn't boot

some of it cant be removed? ive never heard of that before...

hard drive isnt loose?

meaning come out of it's slot/caddy - however it's put in

laptops are different, my girfriend's Powerbook wouldnt start up once and it was because the logic board which slots into place wasnt totally in properly

I have an external FW caddy and a 3.5" to 2.5" ide cable so I can stick a notebook drive in the caddy. If I was getting nowhere I'd probably take the HD out and try it in a desktop PC (like the one you're emailing on??) If I had one and see if it sees it ok and run a disk check on it

there are 2 RAM slots but only 1 is accessible. the other one is under the MB (that's what i've been told).
i don't want to mess with the MB.

@forge: i'm just praying the HD is safe. no way to find out but wait until tomorrow... aarrggghhhh.... f*cking bank holidays and sundays.... do ppl really need them?

happened to me too. Exactly as you described, according to Samsung it was motherboard. better look for a professional to fix it. In the end it will be cheaper then wasting your time, nerves and possibly making it worse.

Sh*T ! Even the hd is dead ??? Did you get any explanation on how that could happen ? Is it from vibration or something... Cruel world, just 2 month after the end of guarantee, that sucks !

Hey peeddrroo, wich brand is your laptop, was the repair service certified for your brand?
There are so much arnaqueurs out there who just want to sell new stuff, I would send it to a official dealer for repair to be sure it´s not only the screw wich causes this.
I doubted very much that 2 things broke down the same moment, that usually never happens.
You could also search the net on a repair manual, with a bit technical skill you manage to dismount your motherboard and can try to refix the screw by yourself.
If it´s more then the screw, even if it´s fixable, I don´t see a chance to have it back repaired from the repairservice beforefore thursday.
Can´t you use your desktop in this case perhaps?

yeah, that sounds more than a bit suspicious. I would call them up and ask exactly how they decided that the hard-drive was dead. If they say "because the machine wouldn't start" it might be a clue that they are idiots!

I would be suspicious about their diagnosis of the motherboard too eh?

it may be that you shorted out some component on your board, but to declare a board dead from one component seems xtreme to me. It's normally ICs that blow from excess voltage, and ICs can be replaced.

They should be able to say - "the CPU is shorted" or "the video buss is dead" , but one dead component does not mean a dead board. Fine to say that with a desktop where a new board is £100 , but with a laptop it's worth replacing the component.

does this repair company sell laptops by any chance? hmm.
