Live 5 MIDI problem- can anyone help?

Hi! Have newly got Live 5 and am really pleased, BUT...! Is there no facility on the program's midi tracks for keying in midi control data? I'm using a couple of rack effects that I want to automate via control change messages, etc. At the moment, I'm limited to recording on a midi track and physically moving the controls on the rack effect. What I'd have done with previous software is to go into a list editor or similar and key in control change messages at just the right point (giving me far more accuracy than recording and physically moving the controls as I currently am in Live). Also, when I do record on a midi track and, for example, move a control on the rack for a certain patch, Live does record and then sends the midi data, but it doesn't seem to visibly appear on the midi track for editing, etc....?! Am I missing something here? I can find no reference to such in the Ableton manual? Any suggestions, anyone... please?!
