trigger finger

I am a previous mpc user. i just got a trigger finger controller to replace my mpc to use in live, only problem is that i'm experiencing latency from the trigger finger controlling impulse. Is this just something I need to get used to or does anyone have any tips?

latency is directly related to your soundcard drivers, and sometimes how quick your pc is.

do you have a 'propper' soundcard? i.e. not the one thats already in the machine.

Also alot of soundblaster cards have very poor peformance despite what they say on the box.

If you do have a propper card, it will let you set the latency (called: buffer size) in its control panel at the expense of some cpu power.

Thanks! My PC has sufficient RAM and processing power I think (1G RAM and 1.6 processor) but I do not have a 'proper' soundcard. Do you have any suggestions of soundcards? I have a pc latop.

fortunately there's like a billion options dude. what's your budget?

in the meantime, use ASIO4ALL to get respectable latency from your internal beast.

Working in a music shop, we get the least problems from m-audio gear, and rme are totally solid if you can afford their stuff.

cardbus (pcmcia) is your lowest latency option, follwed by firewire, then usb as a last resort.

But be sure to check out the ASIO4ALL driver you find at:

www.asio4all.com

They will reduce your latency immensely even with your built in sound card.

Firewire would be your best bet. The Yamaha I88x is a great value, as is the Presonus Firepod. I have an Apogee Mini-Me with a USB connection and am getting only 5ms latency, so USB can be just fine depending on how many inputs you'll have going. Edirol has some nice sound cards for the price. I don't like the M-Audio stuff.
Don't skimp on the soundcard. It'll be worth it in the long run.

I also have Trigger Finger and have no delay. However, I have a very good internal soundcard on my Dell XPS 600. This thing is a quality soundcard. 49ms of latency--very bad! You have to go with an ASIO driver.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I will look into sound cards, but for now I downloaded the ASIO4ALL driver and it did wonders, no latency whatsoever. I had no idea a driver could make that much of a difference. Without the latency, the trigger finger is an unbelievable controller, I highly reccomend it (not that anyone asked) but it puts the mpc to shame.
