wouldn't it be a hell of a lot simpler to just run fruityloops in live - like rewire? guess thats a yes for vsti support then? although not sure it really needs full vsti support (what use is absynth with no midi??)- i'm in agreeance it's simplicity is it's best feature, and their 'standout' market edge is the emphasis on live performance, so i think they need to carry on in that direction and address the interface/performance things that affect it's live use and not get bogged down in too many editing features - personally i use reason to do most of my editing etc - maybe the way forward is by software companies working together alot more closely to integrate (ie rewire 3.0 if there isn't one in the pipeline doing things like shared effects/routing etc so ableton can be kept to what it's good at and reason to it's, so rather than reason worrying about hard disk recording, rewire an audio track recorded in live into reason to use the vocoder/rev 7000, malstrom filters so on......quandry wrote: 4. step sequencer. God do i love fruity loops. I know live can't be everything to everybody, and if it just incorporated vstis, i could just run FL studio 4 inside of live. But step sequencers are huge for me for creating great drum beats. .....

Re: The solution
But such hosts already exist in abundance!stevont wrote:THE SOLUTION:
I think Ableton should build a Rewire "Host" sequencer application, which would contain more standard midi & audio features. That way the programmers could stay more focused and the code could remain autonomous. It would also open up many more options for potential customers. Rewire technology has blown a huge hole in the "all in one box" mentality that bloats so many DAWs.
If you look at the feature set of the "classic" Cubase VST program for inspiration which Steinberg has abandoned for the sake of copying Digidesigns PT model (see Nuendo & Cubase SX) You will take over the universe.

(Logic, Cubase, Cakewalk, etc., etc.)
What advantage would there be in Ableton creating yet another one?
You can pick and choose amongst the features of the various
sequencers and use the one which drives Live best for your needs.
Then Ableton can (hopefully) concentrate on Live's unique features

These are the features I would like to see in 3.0:
1. Better audio editing. (This has been confirmed as planned)
2. A bounce to clip type feature. (This has been confirmed as planned)
3. OMF import and export.
4. Live surround features, like surround panning, six-channel wav file support, 5.1 busses, etc..., but also with a slick downmix to prelisten function. Of course this would require eight outputs for surround plus prelistening for the optimal set up, but it could be very interesting and very usable. (not talking about adding AC3, MLP or DTS type surround features)
5. More flexible routing between tracks as has been mentioned previously in this thread.
6. MIDI sequencing.
7. Full VSTI support.
8. Comparisonics wave image display.
Currently I can use Project5 ReWired to Live for MIDI and VSTI support, but I think that Ableton could do it well. Samplitude was once an audio-only program, but now has MIDI and VSTI support. I can tell you that if you don't want to Samplitudes MIDI features, you really won't notice that they're there anyways. Samplitude also has the option to completely disable the 32bit MIDI engine. I mention all this about Samplitude, because even with MIDI and VSTI support, it has maintained it's original feel and even resources by allowing the features to be disabled. I think that Ableton could do the same with Live.
Note that I didn't include all of the great functionality enhancements that have been posted in this wishlist over the years in my wishlist. Needlesstosay, I want those too.

live 3
Hello.
i appreciate all your whishes for Live 3 and i would agree on most of them. But i have to confront you with some basic math:
Please open the "About" menu entry of Logic,Cubase,Protools,... and of Live.
Count the number of developpers. Multiply that number with the years since the software is on the market. Then consider that we do not simply want to copy existing solutions but spend most of the time with thinking how it could be better. So you can furthere mutiply each feature request with factor two at least. It would be easy to do a MIDI sequencer with a seperate window working with a seperate type of MIDI track and with the need to open the VSTis on seperate windows. Just like it looks in Logic. It would be relatively easy to add most of your requests. But i can guaranty that you will later ask : why shall i use Live or pay for an upgrade if i allready have Logic ?!
What i want to say: We will make Live a big application during the years. But it will be a luxury item: each feature carefully choosen and designed with lots of love. The price for this luxury will be moderate but you have to wait for it till it is grown !
Do you know this Jack Daniels commercial in which they tell you how important it is that a good thing needs time ?
Since we started Ableton every one of us is working 110 %. If you simply look at the time of day some of us write answers to your questions you will realise that even weekend or late at night someone is sitting here in Berlin and is thinking about the future of Live or is hacking some code or is trying to nail down an ugly bug.
Live 3 will not satisfy all your desires but i believe it will offer you possibilites which will surprise you, inspire you and which will follow our general idea of making it easy to achive complex musical results. You will see....

Bravo!!!!
Well said Robert!
You deserve a standing ovation for that one!
My attitude about all thsi is that we are kind of like astronauts learning as we go along. A lot of the stuff being done at by small music software companies is really experimental and involves true innovation which is "the path less travelled" because of it's difficulty.
The philosophy of:
"each feature carefully choosen and designed with lots of love"

"It would be relatively easy to add most of your requests. But i can guaranty that you will later ask : why shall i use Live or pay for an upgrade if i allready have Logic ?! "
Will ensure Live stays on the right path of true innovation.....so Kudos to you all for your 110% work effort!

yeah dude, we all love live, it has thoroughly changed the way many of us create music--making it much more free, in-the-moment, creative and exciting--truly revolutionary stuff as far as I'm concerned. Indeed, it is the answer to my dreams ever since i started playing with looping stuff, i've dreamed as something as powerful as live that i can use at my gigs. It rules. I really like how interactive these forums are, and i think most of us Live heads are patient and understanding enough to know we'll get the quality goods in due time. Ableton kicks ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!
samples in ram algoritme
I totaly agree
BTW. Like the upcomming features in V3 very much.
An idea for the samples in ram topic, we need some kind of algoritme that looks at the number of samples, their size and the frequentcy of use to judges which sample is loaded into ram and which is read directly from disk.
Start to load the smallest and most frequently used sample into ram and end up reading the largest and least used sample directly from disk. This is a relative simple but powerfull procedure. Of course it will take some time to implement such a feature, hope it will be part of some 3.x version.
Note for all DAW users in the discussion:
more ram = better
virtual memory = bad
freedom of music = good
Live = good
