Mac Users...I need help...What Audio Interface should I buy?

Post by chair » Wed Nov 23, 2005 1:34 pm

I have been reading through the threads and now i am more confused than before i started. Here is my situation. I have a Mac 12" G4 Powerbook. I need to buy an audio interface so i can start djing with live. I thought i was going to get the M Audio Firewire Audiofile but the more i read this forum it does not seem to be the best choice for a Mac. All the comments are on the 410 complain about extreme latency and i assume that this is the same one that Ableton is offering with their bundles. For those of you out there that are using a mac with Live to dj at a club or party can you please throw me some suggestions on a proper interface to get me going? Thanks.

i love my firewire 1418, but anything you get, even the most basic firewire/usb with a stereo in/out will do as you can still cue using the built in headphone out on the pbook (as long as you are running tiger).

I am currently running Tiger, i just updated. I have heard there are latency issues with the M Audio 410. Have you heard anything about the Audiofile unit or with the one you use, 1418? Any other recommends?

The alesis...looks like more than i need. Any idea what the price on this is? If you were to dj in a club would you just use this as opposed to the in house mixer? Any latency issues?

i don't dj.
i got the 1814 as i have a lot of equipment i wanted to be able to keep permenantly hooked up and ready to record to their own tracks without re-cabling anything.

also, it makes jamming with other people a breeze as i can just set a track to monitor or record and you can go to any instrument and join in.

basically in my setup the 1814+live have replaced my hardware mixer and i love it.

the alesis is very low latency so no issues to report there. and its $399USD. it was cheaper than any alternatives with more functionality.

I know USB may be going out of fashion, but I use the M-audio Duo and it works perfectly fine for my purposes: usually recording 1 XLR mic. No issues at all.

I use an Edirol UA-3FX but I never here it mentioned around the Ableton Forum, maybe it sucks, but it does the job for me.

If the 12 inch G4 has a mini PCI slot then I highly recommend the the Echo Indigo DJ. I use the Indigo DJ on my 15inch G4 and works great. Have not noticed any clicks pops or drops.

DO NOT get a m audio 410 cuz the drivers are wank. Great audio interface with great sound yet to acheive all this it hurts on the cpu. Latency is crap too if that really concerns you. Don't what else to suggest as that's all i know and ah cannae afford a new yin the now.
