Wouldn't it be nice? Slicer.

no enlightenment needed my friend

I work in phrases of 8th's, 16th's 4th's already BPM matched - I prefer to rearrange midi notes (going to my beat slicer thing) than rearrange audio clips (which if not sliced tighly the way you can with recycle and with no crossfade function like in Pro-Tools) clicks and pops are abound

plus it's fine art to slice a loop in Ableton as we all know it leaves a pop at the end unless you slice it like 10 nano samples before the end - to much work

record my loop - stretch to 136 - slice in recycle - import into Dr Rex, Kontakt etc - rearrange midi notes - viola

Can you tell me what is better to do the thing we are talking about?
(I don't have the newest versions so your suggestions would be great).

So I am able to buy those things:

1. Reaktor 4,
2. Intakt ver. 1
3. Kontakt ver 1,
4. Battery ver 1.

What would be the best and what are the newst versions ? (Reaktor5? Intakt 2? Kontakt 1? Battery ??)

Please help. PEACE.

Damn 1 day ago u asked about kontakt, and one day later u already got it.
Took Native instruments 3 weeks to deliver me my stuff.
How the hell did they deliver that in just 1 day?

Its not in the kontakt manual?

ok now this question is do u have the manual?

select a zone in mapping editor. double click zone, click activate button (changes zone to beat machine mode.) see threshold slider. adjust to fit transients. click map slices to midi. adjust options. click expand.
now slices are mapped across keys starting at key specified before clicking expand.
check better be in the mail.

...then you should probably ask your friend for v.1.5, as slicing had implemented from this version on...

@djadonis

...O.K. I agree that the sound quality could be much better, but still I think that slicing, importing into a sampler, mapping and rearringing via midi is too much work for this task. I really like Ableton's idea of being able to "have your hands on the audio" - if it could be expressed this way. So I would like to be able to make the changes within the audio-clip itself and not having to mess around with midi. I've made a picture of how I think this might work with the sample offset:

http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0VY1 ... SSQ431015C

(please, only view this file, don't download...)

You can find my remarks on that in my topic on the 2nd page of this forum.

But I agree that Ableton should really implement REX-support as it

a) would stop the extra work of saving REX-Files to WAV, if you want to use them in Live

b) would offer a better sound quality as you won't have granular artefacts with Recycle's "time-stretching"

I think most of the reaaranging work could be done in a much easier and faster way - I would only use slicing and midi if I would like to work on a loop in a microscopical way...

Having a DrRex style incarnation of Impulse would be fantastic (or perhaps an Impulse capable of having an arbitary number of slots).

Perhaps if REX were supported it could be possible to drag and drop a REX file from the Browser into a session view slot. In this one action, if Live did the following actions:
- MIDI track created, MIDI clip created with MIDI data to playback slices with correct timing
- An expanded version of Impulse appears (number of slots = number of slices) preloaded with the sample data for each slice

... this would make it a "single mouse action" function.

MIDI data is then ready for editing/rearranging

* side note *
It would be nice of Live could Export REX files ...
It would be even better if any warpmarkered clips could be converted to REX format automatically with warp markers used to specify the slice points. Very useful ...

Cheers

Hi people :D .All i'm going to say is: Check out fxpansions Guru. Its actually described as a virtual mpc! I downloaded a demo a cupla days ago and within hours realised it was going to change the way i make music. Its simple to use, intuitive and extremely powerful, which, as far as im concerned, is how the instruments with which we make music should be. Check it out,i think it speaks for itself.

Quick question about programs such as phatmatic pro, and intakt... Do they allow you to trigger the slices quantized to the tempo that's playing a.l.a groove box realtime-phrase-sequencing style? ...it would be nice to know that what you trigger will be guaranteed to sound tight down to the sample/smallest possible grid factor.

I've posted this a few times lately, alot of people dont know you can select part of a loop in arrange view then drag it straight to a slot in impulse, no cropping/slicing etc etc, just select one beat and drag to a slot

so you can already use impulse in the way you are talking about, all it doesnt do is automatically split it up (I've requested in the past "drag whole loop to impulse and have it autmatically slice into 8 (better still have 2 impulses grouped and go up to 16 slices...and so on)

then the only thing your missing is the "copy pattern to track" of Dr>Rex

so really the 2 requests:
1. Auto slice accross multiple grouped impulses for more slices

2. Copy pattern to track/create midi file

but for now you can happily get playing your beats on the keyboard just in live.

i think the biggest advantage of a slicer like phatmatik is ease of use. yes, you can do some slicing in ableton, but WOULD you. it takes ten times the amount of time to do slicing in ableton as it does in phatmatik, and you still don't get as much functionality. i encourage everyone to try out the demo to see just how easy it makes things. and not just for beats, but for chopping up any old sample. its even better than recycle because the slices are editable within the vst, whereas with rex files you have to enter the external editor to change one thing. you also get individual envelopes for each slice for amplitude, filter, pitch...its polyphonic...velocity sensitive...there's even a couple effects and 2 lfos for modulating parameters. that said, i'd love to see ableton make a slicer because they would definitely do a great job.

Don't know if anybody else has already mentioned this, but the feature you are looking for is already available. Here's what you do: In the session view, take your warped loop, make multiple copies of it and paste it down the view. Then edit the loops for each copy to start and stop in a different place, say just the kick, or the snare, or yo mama yellin, whatever. Then insert an Impulse drum machine into a midi channel and stick your loops into the slots. Just drag and drop baby! Make sure midi is activated for Impulse and start hammerin those keys, and jammin' away. You can also arrange the loops in the piano roll.
