Is music your full-time occupation?
Curious to see from the people who frequent this board, who's doing music as a full-time thing? By that I mean, full-time music student, someone who works in the industry, in addition to someone who makes their living by making music. Reason I'm asking is that I'm setting myself up to take six months off so I concentrate properly, as I don't feel I can make as much progress as I want with having a full-time job, relationship, and still learn stuff.

I'm a self employed professional DJ with a couple of residencies.
Don't hate me just 'cos I make a living wage from 10 1/2 hours per week.

I facilitate people like Soulman and DJ Leathal Rush with obtaining their pro audio equipment... but yeah... that totally doesn't count.
I'm a full time worker, but that just makes me ultilize my free time as much as humanly possible to create and produce my own music projects. I can do it somehow. It'd be great to have 6 months to do only music, but to be honest, I sort of like working. It's weird. I like my job. My thirst audio knowledge is insatiable. The more I learn about it, the more I realize that I want to keep taking the knowledge further and further.
I still want to make it as an artist on some level. I'm still giving it a good go (putting out my own CD soon/I have a band again/etc). But I was actually thinking about this on my way to work this morning... I sipped my coffee and thought "Hmmm. I like going to work!"
[note: I don't feel that way everyday

I'm proud to be a hobbyist. A hobby is something you do purely because you love it, it dosn't imply that you are any better or worse than other people, just that you have chosen to persue it for the love, not the money.icedsushi wrote:Yep, me too but I just voted the bottom choice anyway. Maybe "hobby" is just too much of a weak word for most of us, that's all.DJLethalRush wrote:Well, my job is not music related, but music is definately not "my hobby".

I am studying "studio arts", which encompasses primarilly visual art, but most of my study time is spent at my ever expanding, multi-purpose home studio.
Pretty soon I hope to move on to a master's program in "entertainment technology", where my limited-but increasing skills with programming, experience with DAW's, and overall digital/artistic chops will come into play.
In the meantime my many .als-"manifestos" are fermenting, and I am itching for a macintel and some downtime in the summer to start playing out.
I wouldn't say what I do is a hobby. I literally get paid to read manuals and do classwork for 80% of my time spent at my fulltime IT job. I put way too much time and money into this for it to be just a hobby!
More of a passion than a hobby. Fortunately my first paying production gig is coming up in the next few weeks! There are tears in my eyes...
