syncing nableton

Post by dancefloorwizard » Mon Nov 28, 2005 5:23 pm

does anybody know the best way to sync ableton up to the tempo of a pair of decks. I want to use ableton as a sampler i can usse to easily layer samples over the top of my mixing.

I have played about with assigning tap tempo and assigning a fader to the tempo but wondering if it possible to use some kind of external bpm counter to automatically update ableton witha master tempo.

currently using 2x technics, 2 cdj's,pioneer djm600, powerbook running ableton 5 and logic pro 7

any help please

does the 600 have a midi out? i cant remember but i dont think it has.

I've got an old roland mixer which has a bpm counter and a midi out which can trigger the play button on the first beat with ableton as the slave. its pretty shit really and not very accurate.

no theres no midi out on the pioneer.i have a kaoss pad with a bpm counter and a midi out. I have connected the midi out of the kaoss pad to the midi in on my novation remote 25 controller. Then went to the midi preferences in ableton and set the midi sync tab to on on but still no look.

My novation is supposed to be a midi interface aswell.Just wondering wheteher the midi out has to go direct to the computer or whether the usb cable from the keyboard to the computer will carry the information?

Is it actually possible to do what im thinking?

Not very reliably, no. You're a DJ, use Live as a third deck.

the redsound stuff works reasonably well in my experience if you can get your hands on one...
the microsync is the pick (having owned both that and the voyager) i reckon.
if only somebody would do this in vst...
Hp Elitebook 2.8Ghz. Live 7.0.14 & Live 8.1.5, XP Pro. and stuff...

Will it work on music without a heavy 1-2-3-4 kick though?

I dont' think there is a device that will allow you to sync to ableton directly that will work very well with all styles of music.

I currently use my turntables and ableton at the same time, but I do have a xone 92 so I have MIDI out. BUt, you should be able to use the method I describe below with your controller, as long as you are going to play within a certain BPM range.

Set one of the knobs of the controller to the BPM of ableton, and in the bottom of the screen set the range of BPM that you'll be playing over. Then you will be able to adjust the BPM of ableton with a knob on your controller, giving you the power to "mix" you ableton stuff with your records. I have found a range of about 5 BPM allows very accurate adjustments of the BPM from the controller about <.1 BPM for a tiny move.

hi.
isn't it possiple to let live detect the bpm of your phonotrack by using the tap-function (assigned to a midicontrolpad for accurate tapping)? if it's 4/4 you can't miss a drumhit. the tap is located in the upper left corner of your live screen.
succes.

hi all,

I think it is possible but not yet. By now, is easyer to mix it just like CJ_Hahn said. Asigning controllers to the master tempo of live. You need to have a good controller with high precission to mix well.

I also used a bit stupid thing.. I like to change the tempo with the [+] and [-] Keys of my Num. Keypad.. and Reason does it. So I just open Reason as a Rewire slave to have this kind of control. Try it! it's very easy and funny.
