How to add more File Browsers

If you feel limited by only having 3 File Browsers buttons to use, this tip may help.

It's very simple. Just create shortcuts to the folders that you want to be able to browse to.

Then create a folder and put these shortcuts in it.

Navigate to this folder, with one of the File Browsers and select this as the root folder.

These shortcuts will then act as links to the folders even if they are on other HDs or CD Drives.

It works very nicely, the only drawback being that the search function won't work properly for these folder shortcuts. You also have to be careful to not double click on one of the shorcuts or it will reset the root directory to the shortcuts real location.

Windows Vista will sort this out, but in the meantime you can use Winbolic Link (http://www.pearlmagik.com/winbolic/) to create your 'shortcuts' and that way theyre hardcoded links to the folder structure and searching should work then.

You means windows still doesn't have an alias function built in?

it's got aliases, theyre just not at the filesystem level.

a lot of this has to do with backwards compatibility stance that MS has taken.

I was very interested in setting up symbolic links on my system so that I could reorg my samples in several different ways. The big problem though is that Windows just looks at the file path and if you delete a link it can make the original file become set for deletion and be marked invisible. You can't fix it by restoring the link either. This only happens if you do it through Windows itself. The potential for really messing things up bad is just too great for me to mess with it. I'll wait until the longhorn release.
