Anyone getting sick of Hawtin yet?

some of early acid stuff was good, lots of it not so good.
then i heard him dj quite a few times in manchester about 6 years ago and thought it was really tight, very minimal and went down well.
then when closer came out i liked that hed thickened out his sound, almost going the chain reaction route. after that his music started to kind of reflect his celebrity image, ie. unneccessary vocals/unneccessary haircut. etc.
but then even when techno was very faceless, hawtin always liked to show his face...

all the people who are in the lime light at the moment are there [in the most part] for a reason. i'm not a techno bod, but i have a lot of respect for what hawtins done and the walls hes broken down.

its no good saying that somebody else should get the focus. most of the people in the spotlight are there because they are media darings. period. dave clarke is too pissed off and the chemical brothers are too ugly. etc, etc. hawtin does a reasonable job of treading the line.

most people get into electronic music. they read mags. buy cds. but the vast majority never break out of that loop until they get old and fancy listening to something different. so the majority of people only know what theyre spoon fed. i cant read a mag these days without feeling sick. the smell of freshly kissed asses and bullshit is just to heavy. back in the day i would lap it up.

most of us remember an 'underground' scene its not the case now. the mags and pr managers run the show. so to turn on people and say ok you've had your share, time to move over. thats nothing we can control. hating what sasha does is one thing, but why does everybody know so much about it? certainly not because of this forum. its the press. sasha is the david beckham of dance music. we would be better off giving the music press a hard time.

I'd just like to add that in the uk there is a healthy underground scene running out of all sorts of small clubs run by promoters are losing money putting these events on. Its a labour of love for these people and thats where its at.

The biggest club in Glasgow is the arches and the biggest night at the arches is pressure, run by Slam. It near sells out every month. I used to be a pressure regular back in the day. I lapped up all the big name techno dj's that would play there every month. Dave clark, Hawtin, green velvet blah blah blah.
I dont know if i got sick of the pneumatic drill sound that all dj's seemed to play when they come to glasgow or i grew out of it or i just got sick of the £25 a ticket. but the place turned into some kind of trendy rave. A place to be seen.
Slam have no ideas left, they went stale about 3 years ago. They just book the same shitty dj's they've been booking for the last 5 years knowing fine well it will pull the crowds in.
Not for me thanks.
I'll stick to the small clubs who bring in fresh talents from around the world week in week out.
My eyes have been opened a lot wider since walking out those arches doors for the last time.

walking around edinbugrh or glasgow - every month one of those names is on a poster... ive lost count of how many times mylo and 2 many djs have played edinbugrh this year (at least 4 each i think it is - both playing at new year agan too..)... its just a slow roundabout of the same peole bringing the same guys up to a new fresh year of students whilst lining their pockets...

and well... 3 of edinburghs biggest venues close their doors for the last time in a few weekd... the honeycomb, the venue, carlton studios - and what are we left with ?

I hope everyone is getting sick of Hawtin.

Cause I went to see him at Fabric last week and it was too busy to even get in to the room where he was playing.

I hope Ellen Allien comes back. She was great, and I had enough room to swing a cat.

Although the cat may have been caused by the drugs.

well his money and big crowds dont impress me. I like to go see the artists who are talented and still coming up with fresh material.

I think he is a great dj, nice person, and is a symbol for techno.
He has been there for a long time,made some great tunes, and is always looking to move forward.
Maybe those who are sick of him, are just jealous of his fame?
I see he gets bashed and worshipped at the same time.
It is the price of being a celebrety.

No Carter / May / Aitkins / UR etc are a symbol for techno.
Hawtin in comprison is a posterboy - there in lies the difference.

It seems to me he is becoming a victim of his own success. There's obviously going to be possibly a lot more marketing and media saturation for a hawtin release because he is operating at a higher financial scale then most of the rest. Thats the game he's chosen to play, and i for one think he is doing it and bringing techno to a wider audience while at the same time maintaining momentum and keeping himself loaded with a pension (Which is not in itself evil, is it?). He's the only one in that position at the moment, would any of us do any better? obviously some think so.
Would the rest of us spend as much energy pushing techno as a means of popular entertainment? You have increased oportunities to make a living but you risk stadiumising the whole thing just like in the trance thread.

Most of us have caught him at some stage play a blinder, then seen him again with huge expectations and something goes tits up. I reckon he has a good enough hit rate to deserve his position. First listen of Transitions was a miss thou.
