Assign VST instruments to MIDI

How can i set up ableton live to control my VST instruments via MIDI controler?

press the midi button in the upper right corener.
Click on the parameter.
Turn a knob.
Done

Hi,

first you have to find out what controller number controls parameters in you vst synth. Then, arm the track for the track where you synth is, so even if a midi clip is playing you'll still hear it, and if you move the right button on your controller you should hear the result.
What synth are you trying to controll ?

As an aside to Amo's advice:

I've raised this a couple of times....the MIDI CC passthrough worked perfectly well pre-version 5. In other words instrument specific CC's were passed directly through to the VSTi without faffing around assigning them in the Live interface.

In Codars case this would've meant that his controller, mapped to the V-Station parameters, would have directly controlled the synth without any extra work required. Why the Abe's saw fit to do away with this feature, without at least providing a method whereby an instruments MIDI CC assignments could be saved, is somewhat unclear as it genuinely slows productivity.
