Issues with sending VSTi on the proper midi channel

Post by nebulae » Tue Dec 06, 2005 5:12 am

We just discussed this bug on this forum thread: http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=201865

I'll post the relevant quote:
Microtonic has two modes for RECEIVING midi. In one mode, note C1 triggers the first pad, usually the kick; C1# triggers the next pad; and so on. All of this occurs on the same midi channel.

The other midi mode allows you to play each pad in various pitches. So on midi channel 1, you can play up and down your keyboard and the first pad, usually kick, will play at various pitches...low if you send C1, the default pitch at C3, and high pitch at C5. If you SEND notes on midi channels 2 through 8, you should be able to trigger each of the other pads in the same manner, where the pitch of the pad is determined by the note you send.

In FL Studio, I tested this and it works fine. As I select different midi channels, Microtonic plays the different pads. In Live 5, no matter what channel I choose, Microtonic only plays the first drum pad in various pitches. This problem does not have to do with multiple outputs. It has to do with Microtonic receiving different midi channels in Live. My guess is that I am not sending the correct midi channel information to Microtonic in Live.
And a response:
yes: you are right in that its how Live handles the midi routing thats the problem

we have the same problem with fxspansion GURU: GURU has 8 "engines" in the same instance - each engine has its own set of 16 trigger pads and each engine is potentially trigger on a consecutive midi channel.

so for instance: Engine 1 should be triggered by input coming on MIDI ch1, Engine 2 on MIDI 2 ... etc ..

but it doesnt. if i try and use my triggerfinger multichannel and route MIDI ch2 into GURU, it always plays engine 1.

I dont pretend to fully understand why - i figured out how to get full use out of it for my purposes ... but we determined with the help of fxSpansion that it is definitely in how Live routes its MIDI and not in how GURU is handling it. thread here:

just to clarify:

fxspansion didnt seem to think it was a bug, they thought it was in Live this way by design.

not being an expert on this kind of thing - and not having a pressing need to get it fully working at the time i never reported it as a bug...

... but it could be, i suppose we would need a response directly from ableton on that. nebulae if you want to report it as a bug i would report it to support@ableton as they are probably swamped with getting 5.03 ready and not reading the forum so much .. i would think ..

Here's the response from the Abes:
Hi Nebulae,

basically the KVR thread already contains the answer, i'll quote the
posting:

-------------------
-Quote:
-
-when trying to trigger multiple engines from any source other than the
-internal sequencer, it only plays one engine at a time
-
-why? is there a solution or are you saying that this is in how Live 5
-is routing the MIDI.

Yes, ---> you need to enable multiple MIDI tracks in Live (each track
set to "listen" and "output" a different MIDI channel to GURU) if you
want to trigger multiple engines. See my example Live song for this method:

-Quote:
-and if it is are you saying that we need to bring this up with Ableton?

I don't think theres anything to bring up with them, its pretty clear to
me that they intentionally made a single track in Live have a single
MIDI channel. The solution is to use multiple tracks in Live to pass the
various MIDI channels all to GURU, again, look at my Live song above.
----------------------

In general one track in Live represents one midi channel, so you have to
create one track for every midi channel you want to use. Is this clear
enough? Do you want to add the info to your thread in the bugs and
problems forum? Permission granted :)

I did respond back saying that it was funny that I couldn't select which midi channel to send notes in the main midi track where I had inserted the instrument, and that I actually had to add another midi track and route midi back to the instrument track. But nevertheless, the problem is not a bug.
