freezing up even when no audio is playing

Post by mackers » Thu Dec 08, 2005 7:32 pm

Set up:Powerbook g4 1.5 1gig ram

edirol pcr 1

I run logic on this set up and it is really realy
solid and I can push it hard for 2 days with no
crashes

When i run ableton for djing it plays ok for a while
and then stratss to act strange and freeze

in fact even when I am not playing any audio just
zooming in and out of clips results in freezes, lots
of spinning umbrellas (mouse timer waiting) and
unbelivable latency

its totally un usable... i have tried a few
combinations of cache but I am getting no where

I have reinstalled the latest version of osx (10.4.3)
and also have reloaded live (3 times)

Hi mackers,

which version of Live do you use?
Do you use Live standalone or as ReWire slave to Logic?

/Alex

i use this as totally standalone live 5 (and new 503 beta) i just mentioned logic to make u understand that I suspect it is not a computer or sound card issue

as everything works with everything else

its just live that has the issue

Hi mackers,

does this happen only in certain Live sets or only in bigger or more complex Live sets? Or do you get this too in a simple Live set with just one clip?

How does your typical set looks like? Do you have many large audio clips in it?

/regards,
Alex

do you use any VST plugins?

first thing i would try is temporarily rename the VST folder, so that Live won't see any VST, launch your project that crashes Live, and see what happens.

Same here and I'm on Windows XP Sp2 with a 3.2 Ghz p4. It will run smooth for a while making you think everything is great and then start playing worse until everything freezes up - resulting in a restart. For me this happens as soon as after maybe 15-20 minutes, which makes Live unusable. On top of this I'm fighting a wait of 10+ sec. when editing in arrangement view. Imagine the frustration!

I will see if it has to do with my VSTs, maybe something is leaking in some of the plugins.

And another thing (maybe this is already mentioned somewhere) why does live have such a hard time looping a section in arrangement view. My cpu spikes and I get crackles each time it loops. Looping sections is also something that will quicken up the freezing and playing worse.

Have anyone experienced this loop phenomena, problem?

the live support team really sorted me out in the end

when i moved this file out (it WAS corrupt) it has been working all the way since

see below

the Live log.txt? You´ll find it here:
Live 5:
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Ableton\Live 5\Preferences
Mac OS X: /Library/Preferences/Ableton

Can you let me know how you manage it to crash Live?

Best,
Ch. Kleine
