the saturator in Live 5, with a little eq/ compression and some channel routing would do the job as well as anything else surely?

It does? I didn't really find a nice distortion setting yet in Ableton, although I'm sure that it is capable of it.

Antares Tube is really good with vocals, as well as the snare drums and hats.

Saturator is da bomb!

I use it on vocals lots. It helps if you take lots of low frequencies out (highpass filter on EQ4 works good) experiment with EQ before & after the saturator to see what works best (or even before AND after).

What is also cool is taking out low AND high frequencies ("telephone" effect) then distorting. Also try the chorus plugin after the distorted vocals.... niiiiice!

PS It's easy to overlook the possibillities of Live, because everything looks kinda like a toy (and I mean that in a good way) and not flashy 3D with lots of popups and shit but more and more I discover what a complete piece of software it really is.

I discovered "Erosion" yesterday for the first time. If you put it on a synthbass with the sine modulation you can get this really cool effect going where the sound gets brighter but it's completely different from normal distortion, it kind of gets more "metallic" or grungy.... mmm have to try it on vocals maybe, see what it does....

Hope that gives you some ideas.
Have fun!
