To update or not to update?
I have been a loyal Live user since version 3. Since version 4.1 (all updates installed) I have used it as my principal DAW. I'm a producer/musician and have done a myriad of projects with this software running plug-ins of all kinds. It's rock solid! Never causes me a problem.
Every now and then I think about version 5 and say to myself "today I will upgrade". The features such as "freeze" and "delay compensation" interest me the most. Then I read the forum and quite frankly, it scares the hell out me! I have too many projects going and can't afford downtime.
Could somebody out there tell me if my concerns are well founded?

Yes, I fear...
-freeze sometimes is not that effective 'cause sometimes Live lose the freezed tracks and you have to re-freeze them the next time you open the project.
-PDC is not working with Rewire devices: if you use Reason it will be out of sync! I worked on a project started on Live 4 with Reason rewired (in perfect sync): in Live 5 it isn't anymore!!!

I think it would be safe to say that when people are happy you generally don't hear them as much as when they are not, and also that some people seem to like complaining more than taking a bit of responsibility for their problems.
I would say: Don't change in the middle of a project with a deadline.
But when things calm down a little, upgrade to 5 definitely. (The upcoming 5.03 look like it has some MIDI glitch that came with PDC sorted out!)
The LiveClips concept is brilliant for building your own library of ideas, the new effects are great, device chaning is cool, PDC's good to have.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, I envy you, you're still going get the "Live 5 thrill". I'm a total fan & not ashamed of it!

I'd also say don't change mid-project, but that's solely because of the transition that you as a producer would have to make.
Lots of people work on imperfect systems (check out www.cubase.net for more info
)
I've been finishing projects in Live 5beta 1-18, 5.01, 5.02 and 5.03... If I could finish something in the very first beta surely everyone can work with the relatively super-stable 5.03b5?
I know many people are very particular when it comes to their system, but Live5 really is quite mature by now.
Best,
Andreas

Hope I haven't been misunderstood: I love Live5: I never composed so much music before! And you're right: new features like LiveClips and new effects are great!djsynchro wrote:I think it would be safe to say that when people are happy you generally don't hear them as much as when they are not, and also that some people seem to like complaining more than taking a bit of responsibility for their problems.![]()

I just had a few disappointments finding that something I never had to care about (like midi and rewire latency) in Sonar, here are not so foregone.
I mostly use midi so it's like a compromise between the most inspiring and innovative software around and a bit of pain sometimes....

i played with 5.03b5 last weekend. it was the best version of live 5 yet, i'm very pleased and cannot wait until 5.03 comes out of beta. i had no lag, hiccups or skips. it was a pleasure to play again with a stable product. sure there are still a few things that could be ironed out, but the main performance issuse for me are fixed.
