Decoding cache observations

Post by Soulman » Tue Dec 13, 2005 12:11 pm

After using Abelton Live 5 I went to defrag my laptop internal HD only to find instead of 17% free space I only had 3% free. On investigation I found that the decode cache was full of wave files from the last Abelton session, they are not cleared out automatically.

I did a few experiments, first I reduced the cache from the default 10gigs to 1gig. Then proceded to load mp3's into the clip view where they started to decode. I managed to get 13 files in, these were longish house tracks of around 7-8 minutes average. On trying to load the 14th an error message come on screen saying there wasn't enough room in the cache to decode it and advising to change the cache size in the preferences section. Well, you can't do that in the middle of a gig. :(

I totted up the time of these mp3's and they worked out roughly to be 1hour 45 minutes to try and work out what was the minimum size for an average gig. At a rough guess 5 gigs will give approx 9 hours.

I also discovered that once the cache is full and you get the error message, you can delete any of the tunes in the current session and then decode another mp3. Important to know this if you're in the middle of a gig.

If you close the current session and open a new one, and you then go to decode different mp3's to those that are stored in the cache, the files in the cache are automatically overwritten.

Hope you find this useful. :D

well, so the "decode cache" is not the converted version of mp3 into .wav?

So what are these files in the cache?

thanks

Oh sorry, thought your post was being sarcastic. I assumed that everyone knew that mp3's were decoded into the cache for use by Abelton 5.

My observations were about what happens with the cache and the files in it during the use of the program. This was in order to help the user understand the program before a live public performance.
