Best settings for old AMD Athlon 900, XP, M-Audiophile 2496

Can someone tell me what the best settings are for using live 4.1.4 lite (got it with my trigger finger) and and old computer with 900mhz Athlon and xp? I have used ASIO but get this processor slow down where all of the audio slows with minimal cpu usage and/or use the DX settings but i have about 5 choices on those.

i also am using a radeon video card (read some posts on that) for my two monitors - could this be causing the "distorted sounding" clicks?

your problem may be caused by chipset on mother board

i thought that - the fact that the whole thing is slowing down might mean it's time for a new machine. i guess there is no fixing a crap chipset??
