help with garageband midi instruments and LIVE
sorry if this has been dealt with...i didnt see anything about specifically this:
im using live 5.02 with OSX,and i have a little oxyegn 8 midi keyboard.
i really like some of the midi instrument sounds from garageband, such as ones in the jampacks, and am wondering if i can synch the two up to record them in LIVE.
im not talking about the appleloops....
any help wouldbe greatly appreciated!
thanks

yes you have to route audio from garageband into Live.
I suggest to use somehting like the apple built in AUnetsend or soundflower.
For midi I think the best is to reigger GaragBand directly with you midi keyboard in paralel with Live.
If you want Live to play the GarageBand instruments, you have to use a virtual midi port between Live and GB, though I am not sure GB will let you choose wich midi port will be used for midi in, I guess GB get all the midi ports coming in.
I hope this will help.

Virtual midi port w/ Garageband
How would one set up the port, so that the GB instruments
could be used while on a midi track in live, or playing back
a midi track? I've tried playing with the IAC driver,
using external sync?, just don't get it....I've read it
can be a complicated procedure w/ Logic....is there an
easy way through with GB??

One trick I've discovered is:
Create a Simpler track in Live
In finder go to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files
in here you'll find the aif files that garageband uses and you can simply drop these onto Simpler as the sample waveform.
Some of the 'real' instruments start to sound a bit artifical if you move down or up and octave but some would argue that this is not necessarily a bad thing.
Would be interested to know if anyone has managed to rewire into garageband. for me, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but i've not figured out what i'm doing right to make it work yet!
Cheers

That's pretty cool....but the aiff files are gargantuan, one file for every note of the
instrument I guess..is that how its commonly done with files for instruments?
.so if I choose a particular note on an octave to use on the simpler, than beyond that an octave or so it will sound less 'real'?

Re: garageband
You can play the samples with EXSP24, the plugin version (Au or VST)of EXS24.kenoflife wrote:That's pretty cool....but the aiff files are gargantuan, one file for every note of the

But I am not sure if it is discontinued or not.
Sorry

The samples are installed only if you install Garage band (you do need ilife dvd is you own a powermac or powerbook, for ibook, imac, emac and mac mini it could be with restoration dvds but I don't know exactly if all restorations DVDs contain garageBand.hambone1 wrote:I dumped Garage Band from my new Mac as soon as I got it. The samples sound useful, though.
Are the samples used in Garage Band on any of the Mac install disks? I've had a quick scan and can't see anything on them. Do I need to do a Garage Band install to get access to the samples?
if you can do GB isntall they will be here:
library/application support/garageband/instrument library/sampler

the samples are there, but they do not (even w/ reverb and effects removed) sound
the same with the simpler as with GB....not even close...but what's interesting is that you can find samples such as 'taiko drum' that don't seem accessible through GB....what I've been trying is taking the C5 version of the sample to put into the Simpler - since that is relatively on the same pitch...
Ideally though, I'd like to play the instruments directly through using Live, which
I believe is possible with Logic, through a complicated route....

indeed, and I'm getting to enjoy using them with Impulse to get some good
organic grooves going - like with the marimbas...
in fact, I was despairing a little in learning Live as I kept working with little
sketches and ideas from samples that were more electronic -
interesting to think of a community of folks that were plugged into the GB
samples and were exchanging - especially if the orchestral pack became
integrated in later versions...
