EVOLEME wrote:is it worth writing electronic music any more? I got into the whole scene after it died down and im not sure if anyone wants to still hear techno and such. Im not worried bout fame or money from it but is the scene big enough for a nobody to get gigs mixing techno, originals and records? I live in cleveland also. I know the scene here isnt the best but its what i got to work with at this point in time. thanx for any input

Its pretty dead if most people quit producing that style of music. Music producers and lovers are much alike that we move on to different taste. Dance music is always mutating.

What is techno?
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

Minimal is wery strong here, i think it's a logical evolution of what was called techno, less monolithique, more crafted, mental...

''Give up on get the gigs is not an easy. I try for three years to play gigs. I got two times a gig only and only one paid me less than 100 euro. Its is not worth the time putting ion for performance. I worked hard very hard on my dj set to think that if I work hard it pays off but NO its not paid off. I give up early this year on gigs and concentrate on work for tv which has payed off
Techno is not died just as hoffman say there is only 20% of good techno. It used to sound cool with Dertroit until the German and sweden producers spoil it by making only loop techno. Shame, techno was emotion music to make the body dance and the mind think. Loop techno no.

probably the most misused term in electronic music - mainly because Average Joe who listens to top 40 and couldnt give a rats arse about it will call all electronic music techno.....the term "techno" gets used to describe anything with a 4/4 beat by some people who are into rock bands and hate electronic sounds...

but to those who are into "techno" it is a very specific genre, alot of which pays hommage to the Detroit scene, Derek May - strings of life etc in it's origins....now you have your various strains, the whole "mindless techno bollocks" thing went around for a while, which got printed on t-shirts - the washing machine "loop" techno - the stuff Designed for 4 deck DJs to get creative with (that is the point of loop techno BTW - it's meant to be played by DJs mixed with other stuff so the DJ can have more creative input rather than just playing one record then mixing in another...)

Techno is mechanical, has no real-world equivolent, soundtrack to the invasion of the alien races, sound of the mother ship.

Techno is whatever the fuck you like.

But it aint black box or aqua.

In a nutshell, yes, 'Techno' is very much dead.

Don't forget England and people from Spiral 23 if you give any historic definition of techno style. Not to say "those where first" or whatever, but me think SP 23 is good techno and participated a bunch in the elaboration of a style !

The soul dissapeared totaly.
For me the real stuff is still the detroit stuff from the mid 80's and older.
Yes, too many Hawtin wannabees peddling minimal bullshit, or Basic Channel copyists, Luomo/Disco crossovering or... yes... schranz.

Just occasionally someone comes out with a melodic masterpiece that reminds me that there IS good techno out there. e.g.: http://www.discogs.com/release/297032

When I can be bothered, I try to compose "techno" that isn't the usual dub-delay wank, glitch-toss etc etc. Problem is there are too many producers, not enough composers.

*still waiting for Sun Electric to reform*

This statement is true. Don't deny it, any of you. There's a place for loop techno, and I wouldn't want to see it die either, but there's TOO MUCH OF IT.

Okay, I'll admit I quite like a bit of Cari Lekebusch now and then, but not always! *puts Sun Electric on again*

Speaking of Sun Electric, I heard this amazing S.E. track on a Future Music cd once - it had a weird reversed string sample in it, and was called something rural, like "sheep" something-or-other. Must've been somewhere between 1991/2001 (?)... Any anoraks know what it was called and where I can buy it?
