MIDI Keyboard problem

I am having a lot of grief getting my new MIDI controller keyboard to work with live 5. The keyboard is definitely sending a MIDI signal as the 'MIDI track in' indicator flashes when I hit a key on the controller. However there seems to be no output as a result of hitting the key. When I manually draw a note in on the instrument it plays fine so I know it is not a general MIDI issue. Any ideas what may be wrong?

simple one, but: Did you set the track's monitor to "on" ?
