Help Overall Latency

Post by igy007 » Mon Dec 19, 2005 10:49 pm

hello
i just notived buy doing some recordings of external hardware (midi synth) that the sound was a bit off beat so i check the test explained in the manual to correct the overall latency.
i did the test as described and i have to add 63 mms. is this normal ?
i am using an edirol fa-101 with a G5 dual 1.8ghz and 2GB of ram
if its not normal what could be the problem ?

thanks

Please some help

it seems really a lot to end up with a latency of 85 ms
please some advice?

Hi,

What do you input in your soundcard ? some synths induce some latency, and other Fxs and whatnot too...
Best,

well
the test i did is without any external synth
it is just by using a kick making it go out trough the card and directly back in trough the same card , record it at the same time it plays it and see the delay between the
two.
what is a normal common i/o buffer size settings?

thanks

Hi,

That really depends on your hardware... I don't own a FA nor a G5, do I can't really help here.
It seems quite high. Maybe the soundcard reports a wrong latency time ?
Sorry not to be able to help you more.

512 is what live defaults to on a mac... altho external hardware can have its own wierd specs

small buffer size = lower latency but higher CPU load.

u might also want to check the setup application for the card (i dunno if ur card has got one of these, but most of them do).
also try and run the test with midi > outboard synth rather than audio from live, and see if u get the same amount of delay...

wot version of live ru running - if its 502 i think there is a bug in live which reports dodgy latency time, this has been fixed in 503b6.

cos it seems like ur latency is quite hi for ur computer specs.

i have a g5 1.8 dp etc etc and use a Digidesign 002R...same problem man...
I tried everything...changed the buffer size etc etc no way

Live always gives me more or less 25ms latency...everytime I record
something I have to move the first warp marker forward.

i hope they'll fix it with the new version as, to tell the whole truth, I've been using Live since version 1.0 but this software is starting to get seriously on my nerves.
V 5 is the worst ever. and with 5 same stuff happens if I use my emagic usb
interface...it's hopeless...

starting to hate Live but I keep the faith...maybe by version 12

Hi igy007, Hi Eraldo Bernocchi,

let us try to sort this a bit.
1) To which exact version of Live do you refer?
2) Which is the buffer size you are use and in which latencies does it result?

Maybe you simply make a screenshot of the audio preferences.

regards,
/Alex

hello alex
i am running live 4,1,4
the latency given by the sound card (edirol fa-101) is 7 + 9 ms
when i do the test to put the overall latency i have to put extra 67 ms (which is huge)
i am running at 96khz and 24bit
another problem that i noticed is when i try to record now and live is running some clips with delay (the red square in the top right corner ) the recording continues but when i listen to it after , from the point there was the delay , the sound is just fast clicks.
strange thing the wave is there like a good recording but no sound except these clicks
also then when i start in the timeline to move the end of this recorded clip it shrinks to the point where the clicks started
its getting impossible to record with any security that it will work

please some help
thanks
