its a label actually not sure how many releases there are at this point in time.

i like to see donald play but i'm not that into his sound

its a matter of skillz with him, he's a bad ass on the tables.
(makes me laugh when people say the music counts more then the skills, and D.G. is a prime example of skills shinning brighter then the tracks (imho))

Mike, I know you know yer shit and I don't mean to flame anyone but I always thought techno was what ignorant people called electronica because all they can hear (choose to hear) are the bleeps and bloops.

When someone says 'techno' most of the time they're saying it in disdain.

From what I know, house started out as Disco with a 4 on the floor beat behind it, then the TB303 was introduced and the Disco influence faded as tracks became more purely based on synths.

but to me genre naming in almost as annoying as DJ worship.

<sorry if I missed a similar post in this long thread>

really techno is a genre

electronica is a cooperate word
electronic music is the whole realm

long long time-ago there was house music in chicago and techno music in detroit
and you'll find a lot of these early pioneers were producing tracks that could fall into both flavors..and these tunes mix well together

the whole micro/minimal sound of today blurs these lines of techno and house to a whole new level

personally i don't like all the genre-fication of electronic music much..but it does help in catagorizeing sounds to help dj's sort through all the music out there

techno is cool.

anyways, the idea behind it is cool. The maximum out of a minamal set-up. Just a TR-808 and a synth. Or Live 5 and a decent soundcard.

techno these days. I call it techno-chic cause its has more and more pollished sounds. James Holden, Nathan Fake, the whole Kompakt/Areal/Tiefschwarz sound is pretty techno to my ears and perception of overall vibe in the club...

guys guys!

It's just not 1994 anymore, that's all. Tresor has closed (sadly)

I have to agree with Mike on this one.

I haven't had time to read this whole thread yet so if anyone has posted this link I apologize.

It gives some pretty good background.

way I see it - house has a closer connection to "real music" (i.e. a real band could play some of it - old disco, soul, funk etc) whereas Techno is very clearly machine made, of course there are blurry lines in there sometimes - hence the genres of deep, tech, progressive, acid, underground house - some of those kinds of house could be sped up to 140 and be techno, whereas "soulful" or "funky" house couldnt

Fuck yeah! Gimme some more.
You've identified the problem already. What happened to THE REST of techno as a genre? Leaving out soft and loud for a bit, all that seems to be released these days is stuff that is a variation on minimal, funky, latin, bangin', hard etc. I'm fucking sick of it, and I can't be the only one that feels this way.

you need to look harder for the good stuff...that's all. it's not all looped up bangin rubbish.

all the big dawgs are rocking it - down in South America and Ibiza

I think Glitch is what's hot right now in Seattle - to bad I'm not into glitch, minimal stuff

I like agressive funky techno beats - Marco Carola, Ben Sims, Chris Liebing action

"Powered by Native Instruments"

peace - tekno is still kickin

i noticed that when i was there last. lots of minimal glitchy stuff (not much in the way of mixing sadly). but what i noticed that was even funnier: i saw derrick may at...uh...chop suey? (not sure of the name), and the harder he played, the more hype it got up in there.

so i have figured out this equation...

local/regional talent with great skills and tough pumpin records = eh...ok
big well-known name dj with ok skills and sorta pumpin records who plays a bit harder = god

why it works that way, i will never understand...

A good DJ reads, reacts and works the crowd, he can do more with less. Form over function prevails with the masses. Like Tiesto (DJ Testicle to my wife), he's a circus clown but the kiddies love him when he showboats.

The average person is fairly intelligent, groups people are f---ing idiots.

It's funny when people say something is dying. it's only because you stop paying attention. Get with it and make others do the same. You can't kill Techno.
Yeah. They're great. But very expensive. You wont get these guys to do little clubs if the promoter has to make his money back.

.........

The point is... You rarely get the "great" ones to perform in an intimate club, because they are so damn expensive. They only get booked for those huge commercial events.
I've seen Ellen Allien playing at a small bar at playa de la marbella in barcellona, during the sonar.
A couple of days later, Michael Mayer and the Kompakt crew were on the decks, on the same beach.
I really doubt that they made lots of money for playing at those small bars.

For those looking into minimal techno, have a look on www.kompakt-mp3.net

Shiva - I was actually going to come down to Jimmy's night (The night you played when you were up here) but got caught up, that was a while a ago.

I asked Roman, a friend of mine who went (and knows his s h i t) He said you played TECHNO Proper (!) - he plays out in the mid west a couple times a year in Kansas...I did to until i pissed of some promoter because they drove me from kansas City to St. Louise in a tiny car with these 2 weird girls...the party got busted before I played and I don't remember getting paid - but that's niether here nor there.

word!

I want to go to Cacoon (sp?) in Ibiza - that's what I want for XMAS

I hate to burst bubbles, as this is my first post and it's almost Christmas....

All this talk of why techno is dead and where it came from?...Here's my opinion of where it came from and why it'll never die....

Drugs.

Pure and simple.

Repetition in music seems to be prevelant through the use of drugs, so when drugs don't exist, neither will techno or any other manifestation of the genre.

To the question at hand....Fuck what anyone else thinks, just do what you gotta do and what makes you happy.

I have some 909 samples if your interested.... ......yawn
